Bennett

Time with Reed's family didn't last long enough. I always enjoy visits with them. Though the energy was a little somber this time, with the news of his sister's illness. I did my best to keep it light and silly for her before taking the next step into treatment. Poor Eden had to rush off early as well to begin the donation process for stem cells to her Mother, a lot going on for the ladies around us. Of course, it had me thinking about Gemma and wondering how she was and what she was up to. After our game in Georgia, we had a nice week off. I slept the plane ride back and decided I might take a chance and pop into Brew, just to catch a glimpse of her.

That plan was thwarted pretty quickly when I returned to find my Dad hanging with Hugh in the apartment. I was a bit nervous at first, worried something was wrong, but thankfully he was just stopping to visit, knowing I was due to arrive home.

"Ah, there's my boy." He cheered, rising from the couch as I came back from depositing my luggage in my room. I shook my head in a laugh but went to his open arms for a tight hug. "I had to come into the city to take care of a few things, since I knew you'd be back in town figured I'd pop by."

"Glad you did." I flopped down on the couch, feeling a bit drained from the travel. I greeted Hugh and we chatted for a minute before discussing how the games had gone. We ended up enjoying a beer or two before ordering some dinner. It was nice sitting and just shooting the shit with my Dad and Hugh. As it became later though, Dad needed to get going and I had to admit I was feeling pretty beat. Once we said our goodbyes, I sent Hugh away while I cleaned up. A lot could be said about me, but a slob was not one of them. Having been busy the last few hours I hadn't checked my phone, so I pulled it out quickly and saw that I had a few texts, shockingly from Gemma. Before I could open them though, there was a loud bang on the apartment door.

I jerked it open, expecting my Dad to have forgotten something but instead, Gemma stood with a scowl on her face, holding her phone up toward me. I went to speak but she shoved her way into the apartment. I had to admit, I was pleasantly surprised while also a bit worried. She was absolutely adorable when she was angry though, that much I could admit.

"Yes, please, come on in." I teased, she found zero amusement in my tone.

"Who the hell is banging on the door..." Hugh came out into the hall, looking from Gemma to me and back again. Once she turned her angry eyes toward him, he raised his hands and quietly returned to the safety of his room. I couldn't say I blamed him.

"What is this? What the fuck is your friend playing at?" She spat, holding the phone up again. I took a few steps toward her as if I were approaching a rabid animal or something. I couldn't quite make out what was on her screen. "Don't play stupid, Bennett. What the fuck is this?"

"Well, if I could actually see the screen maybe I could help figure it out. I literally have no clue." I reached out plucking the phone from her dainty hands. I felt a little sick at the article I was seeing. It was painting my best friend and his girlfriend in an unflattering light. "This is trying to say that Eden is selling her stem cells to the highest bidder?" I scrunched my brows together in confusion. "I don't even understand this. She's donating them to her Mother." I looked up at Gemma, hoping she had more information.

"Exactly. Donating them to her Mother who abandoned her. Not selling anything, not that she could if she wanted, it's fucking illegal, Bennett!" She cried out, pacing the floor. I noticed she was in skin-tight jeans and a baggy sweater with her beautiful black hair in a messy bun piled atop her head. She looked amazing as usual, but I couldn't focus on that right now, sadly.

"Don't you have like publicists or something fancy who can deal with this? I know Reed is with his family and Eden is there too... I don't want her to have to deal with this. She's struggled enough." It was beyond cute how flustered she was and how her little hands flew about. "What the fuck are you smiling about?!" She shouted, catching me in the middle of my admiration of her.
