Bennett

The second I was free, I made my way straight to Brew. I couldn't wait to see Gemma. I'd missed her during the travel days. It felt silly to say it since everything was in such an unsteady place, but I did. I had been so busy with workouts, game prep, and everything going on with Reed and Eden, I hadn't texted her or even tried to call.

Once I walked through the coffee shop doors, I knew I'd made the right decision. Hearing Los explain that I would be taking Gem out made me want to kiss his face! I didn't have a clue where we were going, but fuck yes I was getting to take her out on a date. I figured if I kept on chipping away at her walls, eventually she couldn't resist and just maybe we could see where this thing could go.

"So, Brynn and Tate are going to get married?" I asked as we walked out of the shop.

"Yep, provided she says yes which I'm sure she will. My car is out back by the way." She tried to steer me in that direction.

"No worries. We can get back to it later. Come with me." I raised my brows up and down laughing. "Let's go make ourselves pretty." She didn't even question me, just laughed as I dragged her along. There was a shop I had used a few times for suits, knowing they had women's dresses as well I figured I'd take us there to gussy up for this engagement dinner. What woman wouldn't love to be treated to a shopping spree? Turns out, Gemma.

"You absolutely can not buy me a dress, Bennett. This is ridiculous."

"Why not? I can buy you a dress." I shrugged. I had no idea why this was such a bad thing.

"I have dresses that are just fine for a cocktail bar. It's not a big deal."

"Why not get a new one though? Let's have fun with it. My treat." I scanned the room, looking for a sales lady to come to scoop Gemma up and hopefully convince her to let me do this.

"Fine." I paused, not sure if I heard her correctly. She was giving in already? I turned to find her and she was standing next to a three-piece suit on a mannequin.

"Fine?"

"If you wear this. I'll let you buy me a dress, of my choice if you wear this." Her lips turned up in a mischievous smile. The little vixen didn't know me well at all if she thought I'd back down from this. Wearing a three-piece suit to a casual cocktail party, no problem.

"Fine." I mimicked her word and her tone of voice.

While I had the suit pinned and tucked to fit as well as possible, Gemma browsed and tried on a variety of dresses. She refused to let me see any of them before making her choice. The perks of having a little extra cash though, we both could have them tailored quickly to suit our needs and I already had a hair and make-up person on the way to the apartment. I wasn't disgustingly wealthy, but I'd saved and invested enough that I could splurge when the time came. This was most definitely the time and worth every penny.

"It seems your friend has chosen a dress." The saleslady that had been assisting her announced as she walked through the fitting alteration area. "No alterations will be needed, fits her like a glove." She winked at me.

"Where is she now?"

"The dress is being bagged and she's waiting for you." With that she left me to finish up, taking only a few more minutes. I quickly dressed and rushed out to my girl. Gemma. Not my girl. Not yet. It sure had a nice sound to it though.

As I walked out to Gemma, I approached her and paused midway when I saw a man standing near her, smiling and talking her up. Worse enough, she was laughing at whatever he was saying. I instantly felt anger come over me and with two strides I was standing next to them. Gemma gave me a nod while the douchebag just kept smiling.

"It was nice running into you, I'll see you soon." He commented before walking away leaving me fuming.

"Who was that?" I demanded.

"I'm not sure."

"You're not sure?" I growled, stepping closer to her.

"He comes into the bar I work at, he recognized me and was saying hello." She explained giving me a look that said I was toeing a thin line.

"Mmmhmm."

"What? You don't believe me?"

"I do. I just..."

"Say it. Say whatever you're thinking right now."

"I've never been to a bar and recognized the bartender like that. Just seems, odd." I confessed, knowing this wasn't going anywhere good.

"He's a regular. I don't know his name, I didn't ask, but I recognized him too. He was just being polite. You can put the whole alpha male bullshit away now." She was clearly annoyed with me and as much as I wanted to protest and verbally puff my chest, I didn't want to ruin this evening.

"Sorry. I'm sorry, Gem. I just got... a little jealous I guess." I rubbed the back of my neck, trying desperately not to make it all worse. "If you're ready, we can go back to my place to get dressed?" I offered a gentle smile.

"It's fine." She stood. "Sure, I'm ready to go. I just need to pay for my dress." She reached around toward her bag.

"Nope. I got the suit, so I pay for the dress."

"You didn't!" She squealed with a laugh.

"I did. I'll be wearing it. Now, let's pay and get out of here. I have a surprise at the apartment."

Gemma kept looking at me like I was crazy as I paid for our new clothing, as I walked with her to my truck, and even as I drove along to the apartment. When I parked in the parking garage, she was still watching me intently.

"I know I'm handsome and all, but all this staring is starting to make me have a complex."

She laughed, a full belly laugh that was beautiful. Making her smile, and hearing her laugh, were both things that I was finding I lived for. Happy Gemma was my favorite version.

"I'm trying to figure out what this surprise is. This whole evening is turning out to be quite interesting." She mused as I carried our garment bags, holding her hand with my free hand and making our way to the apartment.
