"You look like shit." I had my eyes closed, head leaning back against the lockers in the gym. I didn't need them to be open to know who was being such a dick at nearly five in the morning. "I've barely seen you in a month and now when I do, I'm a little concerned." His voice became louder as he moved closer to me, clearly not picking up on the vibe that I had no interest in conversing with him. "Eden is worried about you." Ah, that's it. He knew just what to say.

"Why?" I asked, slowly peeling my eyes open and looking at Reed Sawyer's smirking face.

"Because, every time we try to get together, you have an excuse. We're also trying to plan a wedding and you don't seem to be interested in being part of it. Is it Gemma? I mean, is that what's got you so twisted up?" He ran a hand through his hair, both of us having completed an early morning workout. Old habits die hard, even when one friend is practically married and living a happy little life.

"I've been busy. I told you, my Dad and I went into business together. I made that investment into the restaurant, that's taken up a lot of my time. Apartment hunting too. It also kind of sucks being the third wheel at every gathering." I huffed, shoving my things into my gym bag.

"I'm sorry, man. I didn't realize that was an issue. Let's do something then, let's hit the range for a bit and have some dinner after."

"I don't need you to hang out with me out of pity." I snapped, feeling pathetic. Gemma wasn't the sole reason I was in a funk, but she definitely fits into it. Once her Father passed, I tried my hardest to offer to be there for her. Unsurprisingly, she did everything on her own. Los was worried sick about her for a bit, but he kept a safe distance to be there when she did finally crash. Last I talked to him, she'd had a mini-breakdown after learning about an inheritance. I'm sure that threw her for a loop considering how poorly her Father treated her, at least during the time I knew him.

Los and I had coffee together once a week, I'd pop into Brew and have a cup with him during a break. Gemma was never there, now that she was back in college, she worked sparingly and our paths had yet to cross. I hated it. I hated that we couldn't even be friends right now. Not that she ever said that specifically, but she hadn't exactly reached out to me so I kept to myself. Los said we were both idiots, but he knew eventually we'd figure it out.

"It's not pity you asshole. It's a friend realizing he's been a shitty friend and stepping up. Now, I'll see you at rooftop golf around three. Don't be late." He grabbed up his bag, slung it over his shoulder, and shuffled out the door.

Funnily enough, when I checked my phone, I had a message from Los. He was inviting me to lunch. I shot him a quick response and agreed to meet up before heading back to the apartment to shower and catch a nap. I knew I'd need my rest if I had to deal with Reed and his meddling later.

"I'm moving up in the world. You're having a meal with me." I teased when I sat down across from Los at the Mediterranean restaurant he chose.

"Meh, I wanted to eat, craving some Greek food, and figured you'd pay. It's a win for me."

"Should've known there was a catch." I snatched up the menu, scanning my options. I was absolutely starving. We agreed on an appetizer and placed our main orders before I realized Los was glancing repeatedly toward the restaurant entrance. "Is someone else joining us?" I threw my arm over the chair next to me, trying to feign confidence despite the nerves I could feel creeping up at the thought of Gemma joining.

Before Los could answer the server came by again, this time Los asked for his order to be packaged to go as quickly as possible. I pinched the bridge of my nose, taking a beat to prepare myself. When I opened my eyes, Los was standing, wrapping his arms around Gemma who was there, greeting him. I quickly stood as well, not sure what else to do. Los gave me a wink, mouthing the words sorry, not sorry, asshole.
