Bennett

A whirlwind of travel and a week passed without hearing a peep from Gemma. I figured she would be upset with Los for calling me, upset with both Los and myself for showing up as we did, but I figured that would wear off in a day or two. Apparently, I was wrong. After the third day, I texted Los to find out how she was doing. It killed me when he said he hadn't seen her. He explained she had only been texting with him due to her Father being in the hospital.

At the end of the week, when our flight had landed and I was about to head back home, I called Los. I couldn't take it any longer. This woman had crawled under my skin and made her home there.

"Adonis."

"It's really weird for you to call me that," I grumbled, turning onto the highway.

"It's really annoying that you're so ridiculously attractive, so I guess we're even. How'd your sports ball go?" He laughed. Los was becoming a pretty good friend thanks to Gemma.

"Fine. How's Gemma? Has she been in?"

"Yep." He popped the 'p.'

"Okay.. and? C'mon man, why do I gotta beg for information?" I could hear shuffling around for a moment before it went silent. I was afraid he'd hung up when I heard him whispering.

"She's here now. She came in yesterday. She looks rough and exhausted. I tried to get details but she was even more tight-lipped than usual. She'll be here for a couple more hours if you're in town and want some coffee."

"Thanks, Los, see ya soon." I ended the call and headed away from the apartment and toward Brew. My heart hurt thinking that Gemma was still struggling but I hoped like hell that if I kept on, I could break down some walls and she'd let me in, let me help her.

Los wasn't exaggerating. Gemma looked completely exhausted. Still stunningly beautiful, but clearly working herself to death. She didn't even notice me enter the shop, keeping busy with customers. Her hair was tied up in a pile atop her head as she buzzed from counter to counter. I stood back in the line, making sure she tended to all the other customers first. When I stepped up to be served, she had her head bowed, punching away at the screen. With perfect timing, Los stepped out from the back. He stood to the side, waiting with nervous energy, like me, to see Gemma's response to me.

"Can I get a tall, black coffee, please?" I gave a soft smile, as she slowly lifted her head, those amazing green eyes reaching mine.

"Bennett." Her voice was soft, with genuine surprise in her tone.

"Hey." I swiped my card as Los sat my coffee on the counter. "How are you?"

"Why don't you take your last break, you two can talk," Los interjected with a smile. To my total amazement, she didn't protest. She simply nodded and led me away from the counter to our little spot in the back. My heart was aching at how beaten down she seemed, I wanted to ask her so many things but knowing how careful I had to be, I kept my mouth shut.

"You look nice." She situated herself across from me, fidgeting with the tie on her apron.

"Thank you. You are stunning as usual." Gemma scoffed at my statement.

"I guess you are here to follow up on the trainwreck you saw last week." Her tone was defeated and her body language defensive.

"Nope." I paused as her eyes shot up at me in surprise. "I mean, I am curious how you're doing. I didn't hear from you all week." She winced at my words and I found myself wanting to comfort her again.

I reached my hand out across the table, palm up, hoping and waiting for her to take the offer. Her perfect lips set as she internally debated. I wiggled my fingers, giving her my sweetest smile before she finally gave in. Mentally I was fist pumping and screaming 'hell yes' at the small victory of her dainty hand in mine. As soon as our palms connected, I slid my fingers between hers and squeezed.
