As she hurried through the streets, the sky, already heavy with gray clouds, finally gave in. Raindrops started falling-soft at first, then rapidly turning into a downpour.

She sucked in a sharp breath and broke into a run, her shoes splashing against the wet pavement. Cold droplets clung to her skin, soaking through her uniform.

Spotting a bus stand nearby, she quickly ducked under it, shaking off some of the water from her arms. Her breath came out in uneven puffs, her chest tight.

She pressed her back against the metal frame, trying to steady herself. The rain drummed against the roof of the shelter, a constant rhythm that usually would have been calming. But not now.

Now, it only reminded her of the last time she felt like this-trapped, suffocated, drowning in something she couldn't control.

Her fingers curled into fists at her sides as she forced herself to breathe.

In.

Out.

Slow. Steady.

She had handled this before.

She could handle it again.

As she stood under the bus stand, trying to steady her breathing, her eyes drifted forward. Across the street, there was a small park-one she had never really paid attention to before.

In the middle of the empty playground, a few children, barefoot and drenched, laughed as they jumped into puddles. Their clothes were worn, their hair messy, but none of that seemed to matter. They splashed each other, spinning under the rain with pure joy.

Her chest tightened as a distant memory surfaced.

She saw herself as a child, standing in the rain with her parents.

Her mother's warm laughter rang in her ears as she twirled her around, raindrops clinging to their skin like tiny crystals. Her father, his smile soft, lifted her up and spun her in the air, her small hands reaching for the sky.

"Again! Again!" she had giggled, rainwater running down her face.

They had laughed together, without a care in the world.

Without the weight of loss.

Without the loneliness that now sat heavy in her heart.

The memory faded, leaving only the sound of rain and the laughter of strangers.

She blinked, her throat tight.

Then, slowly, a small, almost imperceptible smile ghosted her lips.

For a moment, just a moment, she let herself remember-not just the pain of losing them but the warmth of loving them.
