She didn’t turn right away.
But she felt him—quiet footsteps, the shift in the air. He stopped a few steps behind, not saying anything. Not needing to.
Ren never forced anything. He let the silence settle, let her breathe.
“I thought you didn’t come to school,” she said softly, her eyes still on the skyline.
“I wasn’t going to,” he replied, his voice just as low. “But then MJ texted me.”
She let out a soft exhale, something close to a laugh but not quite. “Of course he did.”
She finally turned, eyes meeting his.
“You saw it?”
He gave a slow nod. “Yeah.”
She nodded too, more to herself. “They were going to show something else. About me.”
“I figured,” he said. “But you flipped the game.”
A shrug. “I had to. They weren’t going to stop.”
He stepped closer, slowly, until he stood beside her, leaning slightly against the railing.
“You don’t always have to be the one outsmarting everyone alone,” he said.
“I’ve been alone for a long time.”
“You’re not now.”
She turned to face him fully, the wind tugging at her hair. Ren reached out without thinking, brushing a strand from her face with the lightest touch.
She didn’t flinch. Didn’t move away.
“I don’t want to be your burden,” she whispered.
Ren looked her straight in the eyes. “You’re not. You never were. And I’m not here to fix you. I’m here to stand with you.”
Something in her eyes cracked—just a little. A breath she’d been holding for too long finally released.
“Okay,” she said quietly.
Not a yes. Not a promise. But an opening.
And that was enough for now.
The silence between them stretched, soft and steady like the breeze.
But then she broke it, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Do you remember… when I told you about my past? There was one memory I couldn’t tell you?”
