Ren sat by the window, one leg propped up on the ledge, elbow resting on his knee as he stared out at the quiet street below. His phone sat beside him, screen dim, unanswered.
He'd sent those messages an hour ago.
No reply.
And now, he wasn't sure if he was supposed to call again or just wait.
So he waited.
The tuxedo still hung in the corner, untouched.
He hadn't dressed yet. Couldn't. Not until he heard from her.
His phone buzzed once. He blinked, glancing at it slowly like he didn't want to get his hopes up. Then he saw her name. His heart stilled for a beat.
He picked it up and read:
"I'm okay now. Thank you for checking in." "The dress is silver. With a dark blue detail. You'll see." "Give me ten minutes-I'll call you when I'm ready." "And Ren... I'm really glad it's you."
He read it once.
Then again.
And then once more-slower this time.
A small breath escaped him, like he'd been holding it in this whole time. His thumb hovered above the screen, wanting to type something, but he didn't reply. Not yet. He just smiled.
"She's glad it's me..." he whispered, the words lingering in the quiet of his room.
He stood up and walked to the wardrobe. His hand moved past the black, past the charcoal gray, finally stopping at a deep, dark blue tuxedo. Almost midnight in shade, but not quite.
Silver and dark blue. Perfect.
He shrugged it on, adjusted the collar, then checked his reflection. Subtle, elegant, like her message. He reached for his watch, slipped it on, then sat back down on the edge of the bed, phone in hand again.
Waiting for the call.
But this time, with a steady heart.
She looked at herself one last time in the mirror.
The silver fabric shimmered softly, the dark blue details catching the light as she moved slightly. Her hair framed her face just the way Nicha had done it-simple, elegant. She looked... different. Grown. Almost like someone she barely recognized.
And yet, she couldn't shake the unease in her chest.
