Chapter 82

I went to sleep for the few hours that I had left before morning. I didn't run into anybody on my way in, and I was glad. The next morning, I woke up feeling groggy from the lack of sleep and overthinking that I'd been doing.

Charles.

He has to be one of the most confusing people I've ever met. He was evil, I knew that much- but he seemed so sophisticated and friendly this time around. It was safe to assume he was only acting this way to try and gain my trust, which would never happen. Still, his character and his motives were just so confusing to me. I only wish I didn't have to keep these interactions secret, so that I could discuss this with someone and get an outside opinion. But I was not going to have a repeat of what happened with Sebastian.

That morning, I decided to go to the library and do some studying. It was pretty empty this early in the day, but there were a few students scattered around the large room. I found a desk near the back and got to work on some assignments that I was already late on turning in. I figured I should do them first, and then get to the mountains of other work I had ahead of me.

As I was working, another student came and pulled up a chair right next to me. I looked over to see that it was Leander Prewett. I rolled my eyes and turned my attention back to my book.

"No hello?" he said. "Not even going to acknowledge me?" He was sitting way too close for my liking, but I knew it would bother him more to just ignore him, rather than engage him.

"That's too bad," he sighed. "I was going to ask you to the ball. It's soon you know? Do you have a date yet?"

The ball. I'd completely forgotten about that.

With everything going on, it had completely slipped my mind. I think it was in two weeks. then, it was winter break. Something like a ball seemed so trivial to me right now, so of course I hadn't given it much thought.

"No reply?" he pushed. I looked over to him, and he had an eyebrow raised.

"I'm not going," I told him.

"Really? I thought someone would've asked you by now. If that's the issue, you can just go with me, right?"

"I'm not going at all," I sighed. "Not because I have a date."

"What are you working on there?" he asked me, changing the subject entirely. "There isn't a subject I'm not good at, you know. I could lend you some assistance if you're needing it."

"I'm fine," I said, keeping my reply short and pointy. I just wanted him to leave.

Leander scooted closer to me and gazed over my shoulder, but I scooted my chair a few more inches away. This only made him scoot closer again

Seriously. This guy couldn't take a hint.

Sebastian's POV//

I watched y/n from across the library, debating on whether or not I should go and say hello. She seemed to be busy, so I wasn't sure she wanted to be bothered. As I sat there and debated, none other than Leander Prewett pulled up a chair and started chatting her up. I could tell by her facial expressions that she seemed annoyed.

Part of me was feeling a little bit jealous, but I knew how Leander was; no girl who was worth anything ever fell for his "flirting" tactics. Most just found him boastful and annoying, as did I. After thinking about it, I decided to sit back and watch him fail.

She repeatedly scooted her chair away from him, but he kept scooting closer. I internally laughed as I spectated, wondering if he'd ever get the hint that she wasn't interested. As he spoke to her, she rolled her eyes so far back inter her head, and he seemed to not even notice. After Leander slung his arm over the back of her chair, I decided to go interfere. I could tell she was getting uncomfortable.

I walked over and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Scram," I ordered. Leander didn't move, but he looked up at me. Y/n was punching the bridge of her nose, keeping her head down.

"If you didn't notice, I'm having a conversation here," he said.

"I'm not going to ask again," I told him with a glare.

"Look, buddy, everyone knows you two aren't together anymore," he stated. "I have just as much right to talk to her as you do."

I was starting to get impatient. I grabbed the back of his shirt and forcefully lifted him from the chair.

"Are we going to have a problem?" I asked him, not loosening my grip on his collar.

"Sebastian, I'm fine," y/n said, getting up out of her chair.

"Like hell you were, he was making you uncomfortable, wasn't he?"

"A little..." she said. "But it's fine, please don't make a big deal out of this."

I only gripped Leaner's collar harder, and pulled him closer.

"Look man, maybe if you liked her this much, you shouldn't have dumped her," Leander said, almost as if he was egging me on now.

"You have no idea what happened between us, and it's none of your business," I spat. I shoved him backwards, and he tripped over his own feet and scrambled away from me on his ass.

"Fine, I'll leave her alone if it's that big of a deal," he said. "You should really ask her how she feels, though."

What does he mean by that?! I thought to myself. Of course she didn't like him, right? She'd told me she still loves me. So it's a given that she wouldn't like someone like him, right?

After Leander got up and scurried off, y/n rolled her eyes and let out a dramatic sigh. "It wasn't that big of a deal, Sebastian," she told me. She started to pack up her books and parchment as she spoke to me.

"Not a big deal, my ass," I said. "He was bothering you, so I put a stop to it. What was he saying to you, anyways?"

"Nothing important," she said as she swept her hair back out of her face. "He was trying to ask me to the ball. I said no." She glanced over at me as she said this, but quickly turned her attention back to what she was doing.

"Has anyone else asked you?" I questioned. Maybe she already had a date? regardless, I was glad she told him no. If anything, Leander is the one bloke who I absolutely couldn't stand seeing her with.

"No," she replied. She was now done gathering her things, and she started to leave. She looked annoyed as she walked past me, but I followed her out.

"Are you mad at me for something?" I asked her, trailing behind her.

"No."

"Then talk to me."

"I'm busy right now," she said.

"Okay," I said. "I guess I can talk to you later, then."

I felt a bit defeated- I really did want to spend time with her today, but maybe she really was too busy to. But thinking about it, even if she did have homework to do, usually she did it with Ominis and I. I wondered what else she could possibly be busy with.
