I Can't Just Stand By

Start from the beginning

Shit. You needed to run faster, you had to move faster.

The moment before you could hop into the bunker it happened. It wasn't like it had been in your dream, there wasn't a slow motion burst of energy. You didn't see a flash of light and you could barely register the amount of heat you felt lick your skin, but you did hear the sound. Even if it was just for a second, you heard it, a sound so loud it could crack the sky.

Everything happened so quickly, you weren't even aware that you'd run out of time until you opened your eyes. Blinking, you tried to clear the blurry images around you. Flames and smoke filled your senses as you looked at the wreckage around you. The wooden building was beyond destroyed and completely consumed by fire. Bits and pieces of it surrounded you and the flames felt like the warmest embrace.

There was something you needed to do, but what was it? Sitting up, you winced, your entire body ached and you wanted nothing more than to just lay back down for a while. As you tried to figure out what had just happened, someone appeared by your side. They got you back onto the ground. Their lips moving, but you couldn't hear a word they were saying. Actually, you couldn't hear anything at all, just a ringing in your ears that made your head hurt more than before.

Searching their face, you knew them from somewhere, but where? His green eyes were wide, fear clear across his face as he scrambled over you. It happened slowly and then all at once, the sound of his voice mixed with the blaring of sirens and yelling of the people rushing the scene.

"Damnit, can you hear me? You need to stay down," his tone matched the frenzy of commotion going on behind him.

Reaching for your head, you wished this pounding headache would go away. Your senses felt overloaded with everything happening around you and for the life of you, you couldn't remember why you were here. What was going on?

"Shit," Fujimoto hissed. "I need a medic now!"

You didn't understand why he was yelling so much, you felt fine, it was only a headache. But as you pulled your hand back, you noticed the sticky feeling. With a quick glance you could see your palm covered in blood. The deep color all too familiar. Fujimoto continued to yell for help, desperate to get you medical attention.

Replaying everything back as best you could, the events leading up to this moment came back to you. You were trying to save someone. You were racing inside to get... Katsuki.

"Where's... Katsuki?" Your words came out slowly, not able to keep up with the pace of your thoughts.

Fujimoto ignored your question, focusing all his attention on fixing your visible wounds. His hands were shaking as he pressed against your skin, eyes squeezed shut as he concentrated on closing up the deep cuts across your body.

"Come on, come on," he muttered to himself.

The haze that you were in hadn't cleared up any, if anything it felt worse than before. You could not comprehend the seriousness of this situation. The only thing your brain could hold on to was Katsuki. Where was he? You questioned it over and over, but Fujimoto wouldn't give a response. Closing your eyes, you tried to conjure up his future, but the piercing pain in your head made it impossible.

"Hey! Look at me! Keep your eyes on me," Fujimoto pleaded with you, forcing your eyes open.

You wanted to listen to him, to comply and put him at ease, but it felt so good to close your eyes. To relax just a little. You were so tired and sore, you just needed a moment to rest.

The crackling of the fire had subsided some, the warmth it gave off had disappeared, leaving you cold with a chilling sensation running across your skin. The clouds in the sky were so dark you anticipated rain, but it wasn't clouds that you were looking at. Smoke continued to rise from the ashes left behind, creating a black sky above. There wasn't a space you could see that wasn't covered by it.

Blinking slowly, it was becoming extremely difficult to open your eyes. Your lids felt heavy, the tiredness you felt weighed them down as you struggled to keep them open.

"No no no no no." Fujimoto was rushing through his words, but he couldn't help you win the fight to stay conscious. "Stay awake, I need you to stay awake. Please."

His voice cracked, as he choked back the tears building in his eyes. You could barely make out the two other people who came to help. They must have been the medics he was calling for, or perhaps they weren't. You couldn't tell.

You had never felt this sleepy before in your life and you wished you could tell him how sorry you were. You knew he just needed you to stay awake, but your thoughts felt fuzzy and in a strange way comforting, like a blanket. Looking up at the sky, you could only see black. The color soon covering up everything just outside of its reach. It filled your eyes and soon it was the only thing you could see.

With a deep breath you relaxed into it. You just needed a moment to rest, that was all. Just a moment to rest.
