Mustering up as much courage as you could, you forced yourself up the ladder. One hand at a time, that was what you were focused on to keep your mind from drifting towards the worst. A small breeze hit your face once you emerged from the depths below and it sent an ominous like shiver down your spine. Your eyes quickly scanned the edge of the clearing, searching for any sign of Aimi and Kosuke, but the forest was exceptionally quiet, giving no sign of life in any direction. A snap of a tree branch broke up the silence and a round of slow claps came from the dark coverage of bushes and leaves.
"You almost had me," Dabi spoke loudly across the clearing, making sure to keep ample distance from you both. "Really you did. It's difficult keeping up with that stupid quirk of yours. But unfortunately your brats just couldn't help and set off our security system."
With a single step from Katsuki, you could see the pure destruction the wildlife would undergo if he got any closer to Dabi.
"Ah, I wouldn't do that," Dabi waved his fingers, signaling one of his men to come forward.
Your heart wrenched in your chest as you watched him drag a struggling Aimi towards his boss. She yelled while she tried to fight off the man holding on to her, but it was no use, she wouldn't be getting anywhere any time soon. Your blood ran cold as she caught sight of you from across the way.
"Mom!" She shouted, her hand now outstretched in your direction, pure hope in her eyes that you would take it and this could all be a dream.
You couldn't will yourself to move, you knew what would happen if you did. But this seemed to be the end of Kat's rope entirely.
"Touch one hair on her fucking head and your dead," he snarled. Small cracks and sparks erupted from his hands, sealing in his threat.
"Oh stop worrying dad," Dabi shrugged off Katsuki's lethal warning, mocking you both as he let his blue flames engulf his own palm. "She isn't the one I'm after. The other one, Kosuke was it? He got away and I want him instead. Look at it as a trade, you get one or the other, but not both."
"Like hell I would ever do that," Kat yelled back, stepping right back into Dabi's game.
The villain before you pulled your daughter close as a circle of flames danced around them, blocking you both from getting anywhere near them. "I have no problem burning us both to a crisp. So cut the crap and get the boy." Dabi's fake kindness had vanished and his true nature made its way to the surface. Terror crept up Aimi's expression, as her own bravery dwindled away.
"I'll get him," you whispered. It could barely be heard over the two violently arguing, but Dabi was sure to catch it and it brought his sinister grin back in place.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" Kat turned his attention on you, bewildered that you would even consider helping him.
"You need to trust me."
"Trust you?" Kat exploded. "You're willingly ready to hand over our son to some lunatic."
"I need you to trust me," you spoke with more of a commanding tone. He didn't retaliate, some small part of him knew that if he prevented you from going, Aimi wouldn't be making it out of here unscathed. Turning your attention back to Dabi, you needed him to stay off your back. "Don't even think of sending someone following after me. I'll go by myself, that's the deal. Take it or leave it."
"Fine," he agreed. "But don't take too long or your little girl here might not look the same when you return."
Your nerves were on edge from his words alone, but with Kat here he wouldn't really try anything. Turning from the group, you brought up Kosuke's future, using it to lead you to his hiding spot. He wasn't that far away and he probably heard everything that you all had said. You walked through the mass of trees with ease, moving further into the dark woodlands. Stopping suddenly, you heard a small sniffle coming from a clump of bushes.
