If only

Chapter 1

"Ok get dressed, we leave in 20! If you have to I will let you eat in the car" I say and he nods.

He doesn't have school for another hour and a half but I have to be in early. Thankfully the school has a early program for kids who's parents have to be in early the school start time. It comes in handy a lot!

No one knows I'm returning, they think I'm coming back in a month. My dad knows though but he's keeping it a secret from everyone else. I'm kind of nervous to see how they react, I know it's definitely going to be a surprise. And then my dad also told me we have a new member to the 118! Kind of nervous about meeting the new member, I kinda get nervous meeting new people. When I first joined the 118, I was really nervous but by my second day I felt so much better. I felt welcomed very quickly probably because I'm cap daughter?

I make my way to kitchen to make breakfast to eat in the car. Since we are starting to run late. I always try to be on times and not late. I hate being late! I'm snapped out my though when I hear my son coming down the hall

"Mommy" he say and I smile once I see him

"Hey buddy, you look handsome" I say with a smile. I give him the biggest hug without knocking over his cane.

"Mommy I'm hungry" he says

"Go put you shoes on and we will eat in the car" I say and he nods. He does just what I say and goes to put his shoes on. When we are all ready to go, we head to my car and get inside. I help Christopher get in cause he struggles with getting in the car but recently we've been working on trying to get stronger and practicing getting in the car so he can do it himself. Every year we like to set a goal or two for him to focus on to get stronger. We come up with the goal on New Year's Day and then we see how much we have accomplished on New Year's Eve. He loves doing it, right as he wakes up on New Year's Day he asks me if we can make the goal, my father thinks it's a great way to help him get stronger and build more skills.

"Ok so I made you eggs with bacon your favorite. Here is utensils and then here are some orange juice I put in your cup" I say giving him a plastic bowl that has eggs and bacon in it and then his travel cup with orange juice in it. Christopher loves my cooking, his favorite breakfast is bacon and eggs, he loves my dads grilled cheese sandwiches and he loves when I make mac & cheese for dinner. Mac & cheese and any other pasta dishes I make he loves, any dish that mean you're my father makes he loves

Me and my father are really good cooks is what everyone says. In the fire house we eat breakfast and dinner together. We don't always eat lunch because were usually at our busiest during the day so lunch is more on the go or leftovers. But my dad will make amazing omelettes for breakfast and then some amazing dishes for dinner. I can make anywhere from pasta dishes to meat dishes for dinner. Sometimes he'll cook dinner or sometimes I'll do it or we'll just cook dinner together to make it go faster. It also depends on who is at the house.

I try taking earlier shift so I can be with my son more and make sure I spend time with him. We have a lot of movie nights with pizza and snuggle on the couch. But there's time when we can't!

Money is struggle for me, my father is helping the best that he can but sometimes it's hard. My dad will help with grocery shopping and other little things and I focus on the rent which sometimes I'm short a lot. LA is expensive!

Before I know it we are at the school, I see some kids already saying goodbye to their parents, the kids do have to go in early because their parents are either first responders or are nurses and have to be an early. By the time we got to the school Christopher finish his breakfast and his juice and he has the greatest smile on his face.

"Ok, I will see you tonight. We will have movie night with pizza tonight I promise" I say and he nods excited. Once a month we'll have movie night with pizza and tonight is that night! He loves movie night and sometimes he begs me to have it on days where it's not moving out so there are some times where we have it more than once

"Yay, and we can snuggle" he asks me and I nod

"Anything for you" I say and he smiles

"Ok, it's time to go bud but I'll see you later I promise. Have a great day at school love you" I say and give him the biggest hug and kiss his head

"Love you too mommy" he says smiling and also gives me the biggest hug. A teacher comes over to grab his bag so he doesn't have to carry it. He makes his way inside but when he gets to the door he always waves to me and I way back. God I love my kid!

I get back in my car and I drive to the fire station. I see everyone car that is supposed to be here right now. Oh there gonna be excited!!

I parked my car, grab my bag and head inside. I walk inside to find no one on the first floor at all. They must be upstairs eating breakfast or watching TV.

I go into the locker room and I put on my uniform that I have to wear every shift. I make sure I'm all ready for the day. when I'm done I head up the stairs to find everyone at the dining room table eating omelettes that my dad made. No one sees me until Hen looks up and sees me.

"Omg" Hen says, puts down her fork and gets up to run to me to give me the biggest hug. Whenever I'm gone for a week or a month I feel like she's the one who misses me the most probably because we act like we're sisters.

"Hello to you too" I say with a giggle returning the hug she gives me. I feel two other people hug me and I realize it's buck and chimney

"It's Great to have you back, now we can have a better person drive the engine" Chim says and looks at me!

"let me guess he was not great" I asks and they nod. I am known for driving the engine on calls! I'm known as one of the best drivers on the team, when I leave for a week or a month I have to find someone to fill in for my spot to drive. I pick someone new this time because the old person I used to pick all the time retired a month ago. I also found out from my dad that the person who was driving the engine got fired. Once he got the title of driving the engine they noticed that he started making a lot of mistakes with driving but also with stuff on calls and the littlest things at the house.

"Oh i'm sorry" I say and they nod

"Finding someone that's not you to drive the engine is a hard thing because you're one of the best drivers" Hen says and I nod. I could have a hen or chimney drive since they drive the ambulance all the time but there's a big difference between driving an ambulance and driving the engine! But also those two always sit in the ambulance all the time! I only drive the ambulance when we're sending A patient to the hospital while they do their stuff in the back.

"So how is Minnesota" Buck asks and I nod

"It was good, I've visited my mother and siblings Graves, I saw some old friends, spent majority of my time at the diner but also visited some of my old teachers. Which a lot of them are shocked that I am a fire fighter which kind of confuses me because in class they said I was always that daredevil who wanted to be a fire fighter" I says and they nod

"Also, I did tell Mrs. Banks that you said hi" I say to my dad, mrs. Banks is the owner of the diner. I work there in middle school, I did small jobs they're like bringing people to a table and then there was times where I would bring the food out to tables. Mrs. Banks is a very nice person, she reminds me a lot of my grandmother

"I'm so happy you're back, I felt miserable without you" she says and I laugh

"Did they drive you nuts" I ask her and she nods

"don't worry you're not alone anymore" I say and she smiles

"Oh Alyssa, I would like you to meet our new member. He started 2 weeks ago!" My dad says and I nod. I walk over to the table to see someone stand up and turn to face me but i'm shocked to see who it is, someone I thought I would never see again
