"Ok that has to at least be a six" Chim says
"No seven" me and hen say at the same time as we make our way to the front of the building where the exit doors are. Whenever something like this happens we always make our way to the front of the building.
"That was at least a seven" Hen says ones were all outside and the shaking has stopped
"Yup" I say nodding agreeing with her
"let's go, quickly straighten or clean up anything that looks out of place or a mess. The rest of the day it's gonna be chaos" my dad says and we nod
I start checking the ladder on the main engine just to make sure the shaking did not knock any bolts loose. That would be bad since we almost use The ladder on every call. Isn't long before the bell starts ringing and it's time to go.
We grab our gear and put it on, I sit sit in the back behind the passenger seat where my dad is sitting, Eddie is behind the driver seat and buck right across from me. Chimney and Hen are in the ambulance.
As we're on our way to where we have to go I completely realize some thing, I have to check on my son. My nerves are high and I'm slightly freaking out inside but I'm trying to completely normal. I pull out my phone and I start texting my son to see if he's ok. You might think seven-year-old has his own phone, I got him a phone in case of emergencies or if I'm working late I just shoot him a quick text while he's at school. It's also has being a single mother I don't have another person to watch him or to text to tell him. It's more for protection reasons, he only uses it to text me or to play a couple of games but nothing too extreme. He's not really on the device that often every day. In total he's only on for an hour maybe less a day. I can see how long he's on the phone so that's how I know. But when I realized my texts are not going through I did not realize panic was starting to spread on my face
"Is everything ok" Buck asks me and I nod no. Which grabs everyone's attention in the backseat and I can tell my dad is on alert because I can feel him moving to look back at me
"there's no service number text won't even get through" I say looking at my phone and then looking up at them
"Who you trying to get a hold of" Buck asks me since he knows everyone I know and love is with me right now. I take a deep breath before the truth comes out
"My son, i'm trying to reach my son" I say
"Whoa, you got a kid? Since when" Buck asks me
"his name is Christopher Nash, he's seven" I say showing them a picture and I can tell Eddie his head is spinning like he's trying to think if my kid is his or not
"Awwww he's so cute" Buck says with a smile
"He amazing! I'm all he has besides my dad. His father is not in the picture" I say and they nod. And I can tell Eddie is really trying to think if this is his son or not. I have a feeling he's gonna be asking me later when all of this chaos is over
"Why did you keep it a secret from us? I'm sure Cap is shocked" Buck says and giggle a little
"Oh I know about him" my dad says and Buck look shocked
"How? How did you know before us" Buck says
"well when I first moved to LA, my dad was the first place I was going and I had to tell him because that's where I was going to be staying because when I first came to LA I had nothing, no job, no house and no money. And I knew if I didn't go to my dad's place I wouldn't be here today and my son wouldn't either. And I can't imagine my life without that kid, I love him damn too much and I'm grateful for him every day" I say with a smile at the end
"I'm sure he's fine Alyssa" my says putting his hand on my shoulder
"I know, I just wish I can hear back from him but nothing is going through" I say and he nods
"He's at school" Buck asks me and I nod
"Yeah" I say
"Hey, i'm sure he's fine" Buck says trying to ease my nerves. But I know I won't be calm until he's in my arms. The rest of the ride is quiet until we get to the location. I've never seen anything like this!
"you guys ever deal with anything like this before" Eddie asks us
"No, this is a first" I say looking up at the building that's about to collapse
"They seriously think that's gonna hold it up" Buck asks as the construction workers are putting up posts to try to keep the building in place
"let's go find the incident commander" my dad says and we make are way to the incident commander
"Captain, chief Williams, incident commander" Williams says to my dad and they shake hands
"Captain Bobby Nash how can we help you" my father says. And she starts going over important details that we all listen closely to. Turns out this was a 7.1 earthquake! Damm
"Here's how you make it to the end of the day. You don't worry about the things that you can't do anything about. Focus on one task at a time. I can't order you guys do inside that building, and I'm not gonna judge you if you decide not to" my dad says
"Hen, you got a kid so" Chim says to Hen
"Yeah, and I hope if someone whose job it was to save him had the chance they do it. No matter what" Hen says
"Where do you want us" I say to my dad
"Hey, you guys will want to see this" an officer says coming up to us and lead us to one side of the building where there's a guy leaning against the window
"Buck, Alyssa would you say that's the 11th floor" Eddie asks us
"Yeah" me and Buck says at the same time. Something tells me I'll be with Eddie all day ugh.
"I bet we could take the ladder to that fourth floor" Buck says
"Cut the distance in half" I say
"Head on up there, Alyssa take a medic bag, you don't know what you will find. Buck make sure she don't do anything stupid" my dad says and I nod but give me dad a look. I know he just looking out for me
I grab a bag and little necessities I might need that's not in the bag and we head on up to the ladder.
"After Northridge, fema spent $200 million retrofitting every school in the LAUSD. Ceiling tiles, lighting fixtures. Alyssa, your kid is in the safest place he can be" Buck says but it doesn't help at all
"Can you just shut up Buck" I say and he looks hurt but then he understands
We make are way inside the building. Eddie first, then me and then Buck. This is gonna be interesting as the building is one a slant
