October 1984_

I let out a hum as I noticed Steve's car not too far away and slammed my hands off the roof rhythmically before leaning down to the window and giving it a knock, smiling.

"Y/n!" Nancy gave me a small glare once the window had rolled down.

"You guys are in a bit late, hm?" I smiled as they just looked at me through the window, "too busy smashing faces to actually, I don't know, arrive for our study session?"

"Oh crap," she glanced away before looking back, "I am so sorry, I totally forgot."

"That much was evident," I shook my head with a sigh before nodding to Steve, "McFlippity Floppy Hair, how's it going?"

"That nickname seems to get longer by the day," he rolled his eyes, "not bad all things. And you, leather lover?"

"Would you look at that, he knows me so well," I said with fake dramaticism before flipping him off, "I'm good, yeah. Interesting rumour though."

"Oh?"

"New kids," I told them, "from California apparently. Heard the ladies in the office whispering about it on my way out of the school. Curious?"

"Not really," Nancy shook her head before pausing, "though, makes you wonder why they've come from California to Indiana."

I just shrugged before the sound of a car revving as it pulled into the car park behind me echoed across the area and we all looked over, Nancy and Steve climbing out of the car to look.

I let out a low whistle, "sexy car, hm?"

"Really, y/n?" Nancy jabbed me in the side with her elbow, rolling her eyes in some form of disbelief and I just shrugged it off.

"Now, unless Tommy got a new car, and I doubt it, that must be our new kid," I stated as I leaned against the vehicle behind me.

We watched as some long-haired blonde dude with a cigarette and tight ass jeans climbed out of the car, a red-haired girl with a skateboard not long after him.

"Not too impressive though is he?" I glanced over to Nancy before pushing myself off of Steve's car again, adjusting my bag on my shoulder as I did, "anyway, classes start soon. Should we head in?"

"You know," Steve said as we started walking, looking over at me, "I'm not sure I like this change in you."

"What? Hate I'm doing academically better than you, muscle brain?" I asked him before rolling my eyes, "you've just got to deal with it because this year, I am an academic weapon."

"Hell yeah you are," Nancy smiled, and I nodded along.

Last year, after all the chaos that happened and I found out that Barb wasn't alive, nor going to be returning to be buried, I'd decided that I'd fix my grades, you know, try living the life Barb can't? Nancy had the same thoughts but her grades were already spot on anyway so she pretty much put the energy she would've pulling her grades into helping tutor me so I could pull my grades.

I went from a failing grade to a semi ok, on the average scale, kind of grade so... worked out in the end, I suppose.

"What class do you have?" Nancy asked as we stopped at her locker.

"Uh—history?" I answered, a bit unsure.

Having a separate schedule to her this year sucks because now I can't just follow her and hope she knows where she's going.

"You should head off now then, that's on the other side of the school and you still need to stop at your locker," she told me.

"Yeah. Shoo, shoo," Steve flicked his hand at me like I was some bird.

"You also have history, you know?" I scoffed, "so if anyone needs to 'shoo' you do too."

Still in this dumbasses classes though.

"Both of you just go, I'll see you guys in the break," Nancy pushed us slightly before she shut her locker, books in hand, "be nice."

"When are we not?" I smiled, she just gave me that look she gives me sometimes before walking away towards her class and I glanced to Steve, "I'm not walking with you Steven, go find your own way to History."

"It's Steve!" he shouted after me as I walked away.

"Yeah, yeah," I just waved him off not even bothering to look back at him.

Lunch_

"So?" I dropped down on the bench opposite to Nancy at the table she was sitting at, "you going?"

"Going?" she repeated.

"Don't play dumb," I reached forward and tapped the bright orange sheet poking out of her notebook, "or are you going to leave me to have all of the fun alone... again?"

"What? The party? I'm... yeah. Totally. I'm going," she nodded.

"Nice," I reached over and grabbed the small pouch of chips(/fries) on her tray and pulled it over to me.

"Hey, those were mine," she exclaimed.

"Yeah. As if you didn't pick them up for me," I scoffed before Steve dropped down next to Nancy, his arm immediately going around her shoulders as he reached forward with his free hand to try to take a chip(/fry) from my little pouch.

"Hands off, Flippy McFlippy Flop," I pulled them back and glared, "they're mine."

"Wow, I didn't know fry hoggers actually existed," he shot back at me, I just stuck my tongue out before eating one right in his face.

"How's that for chip hogger?" I asked, correcting his words.

"You Brits and your chips," he rolled his eyes before looking over at Nancy, "hey."

"Hey," she returned before they both kissed.

"Eugh—really? Right in front of my chips(/fries)?" I sighed before leaning back slightly, "by the way, are you going tonight?"

The two parted and glanced over to me.

"To the Hollands?" I asked.

"Are you not?" Nancy asked.

"You guys left me there alone last week. So no. No I am not," I replied, waving a chip(/fry) around at them as I spoke, "by the way, don't be surprised when you hear what they say tonight. Practice your expressions."

"What do you mean?" Steve asked.

"They hired a P.I," I told them, "so, you know, just... practice what you're going to say, how you're going to react. We know Barb isn't returning but they don't so even this doesn't seem like too much when searching for their one and only daughter."

I sighed as I ate the chip(/fry) in my hand and glanced away, "just... be prepared. It's... kind of hard to listen to."

"There you are, Miss l/n," a teacher stopped at the end of our table, and we all looked up at her, "you're late for your career counselling. Come on, now. You can talk with your friends later."

I let out a groan as I stood up, "I do not have enough hours in the day for all this shit."

"Language," the woman warned me before turning and walking off.

"Guess I'll see you guys later," I gave the two a small wave before following after her.

Ugh.

Career counselling.

That fucking sucks dude.
