Waking up had never been so hard before this morning and I was totally ready to just skip but I will not. I won't give Steve of all people the satisfaction of being right about my skipping the other afternoon being a steep slope to old habits.
Besides, I'm pretty sure I have an exam in biology today that I made a bet with my teacher on that if I get over 70% on it then I won't have to do any homework for the next month and I am not passing that up so... school it is.
"Unfortunately," I muttered as I pulled my helmet off and looked at the building. The day was pretty miserable as well, cloudy and grey.
It's also Friday so what's the point skipping, I'm literally going to be off for two days in like seven hours anyway?
"Morning," Steve stopped next to my bike as he was passing and glanced over to me, "good afternoon?"
"I guess," I shrugged before looking over to him, "don't you have basketball practice this morning? What're you doing here so late."
"I do," he sighed, "but that dick is pissing me off."
"Don't let the new kid beat you up, dude," I climbed off the bike and stretched slightly, "use your breakup with Nancy as fuel for power—wait—you guys did break up, right?"
"Our relationship was bullshit so... probably? I don't know," he sighed before slumping forward, "see you in bio."
I just let out a low hum in response as I watched him walk away again and then pulled my keys from the ignition before moving towards the school myself. Once inside, I went straight for my locker and threw my helmet in before grabbing my books for the classes I had today.
The rest of the day just... passed in a blur? First was chemistry, then bio and the exam—I checked with my teacher and the deal was still on, brilliant!—and then break, then I went back in for English, then lunch and after was maths and a careers counselling session that started with a 'where were you for your afternoon classes yesterday?' which led to me lying about not feeling so great and deciding to go home. I mean—it wasn't a total lie, I suppose, but it wasn't the total truth either.
After that I just went home, just on time to catch the phone as my parents called to check in... kind of.
"Hello, l/n household."
"Y/n? It's Dad."
"Oh! Hi, how's it going in Portland? Everything ok? You're coming home tomorrow, right?"
"That's why we're calling, love."
"What's wrong?"
"Something has happened in the company's head branch over in England so... we'll be heading to London tonight, your mother and I. We'll be back in a month or so."
"Dad? Are you serious? There's no way you're just going to England for a month and leaving me in this whack ass town alone."
"Y/n, if I didn't think you were responsible enough, then I wouldn't be, but I think you'll handle yourself fine. Now, you can use the money I've left in lock box in my bedside table drawer to get your weekly expenses. When we return, we'll make it up to you, I promise. We'll go to New York or wherever you want but for now, this is the situation."
"Wh—" I attempted to reply but was cut off by that annoying tone of another call attempting to come through the line, "Dad, I've got to go. Someone's calling."
"I'm sorry, hon, really. We'll bring you some gifts back with us. Promise."
"Yeah, whatever," I sighed before I hung up the call just as the phone rung again, "hello? L/n household..?"
