We reached the centre of the junkyard and then emptied out the buckets and box of the meat left over.

"I said medium-well!" a voice shouted out, we all looked up to the source to see one of the nerds and a red-haired girl that I'm pretty sure I've seen with Billy on occasion at the top of the hill.

That must be Lucas and... some girl.

Pretty sure Lucas is the one who has always attempted to get Nance's and my attention various times over the past few years, could be wrong about that though.

"Who's that?" Steve asked.

We glanced to Dustin who wasn't answering, and he looked a mix of disappointed and slightly fed up.

I glanced to Steve, and he caught my gaze.

Weird.

He just nodded.

Guess we're thinking the same thing.

"Come on," I glanced around, "let's—uh—get sorted."

Once the two joined us, Dustin dragged Lucas out of the way, and I gestured to the girl.

"Yo, kid, come help me move some stuff around," I told her.

"My name is Max. Not kid," she told me.

"Nice to meet you, Max. I'm y/n," I smiled, "now we just need to bring in as much metal as we can for fortification, so let's grab that."

"Ok," she nodded, following me to the side to start pulling things together, "do you actually believe all of this?"

"Believe?" I glanced back at her, "I guess it'd be hard to if you weren't here last year—yeah. I believe it. I lived it."

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"The monster that was killing people last year—one of my close friends included—we hunted it. It almost had us too," I answered as I passed over a metal sheet to her, "I didn't believe any of it until I almost got my ass handed to me by it. It was... fucking terrifying, man. I don't know about the rest of it, wasn't there, Nancy told me that stuff but... it's had to discredit it when I fought a literal monster from hell so... you know."

"Right," she nodded, "I guess."

"Don't worry. If things go crazy tonight... well... you'll see for yourself just how fucking crazy it is around here once a year for some reason," I told her before pointing off to the side, "c'mon, let's grab those barrels, they'll be good."

"Alright," she nodded, and we hurried off, the guys following after us.

After a while, Steve and I decided we had enough metal and started fortifying the abandoned school bus after deciding that keeping the five of us together was probably for the best and decided that that was going to be our base of operations.

We doused the meat and the area around it in the fuel(/gas) and then finally decided that we'd set everything up enough by the time the sun was setting and took back to the bus where we sat, ready and alert from sunset straight into the darkness of the evening.

"Where'd this fog come from?" I muttered as I climbed back into the bus after stepping out to readjust a panel that'd slipped moments ago. Lucas was on the roof with his binoculars up and everyone else was in various parts of the bus, "like a horror film up in here."

"Perfect considering this is a horror situation," Dustin muttered as I dropped down next to Steve who was messing with his lighter.

"So..." Max trailed, looking over to us, "you also really fought one of these things before?"
