She was talking to Steve, then.
He looked up and over to her, lighter burning as he did before he nodded and flipped it shut again.
"And... you're, like, totally a hundred percent sure that it wasn't a bear?" Max asked.
"Are there bears in Indiana?" I asked.
"There are," Steve nodded.
"Damn, never seen one before in the years I've lived here. Crazy info," I stared.
"Shit—don't be an idiot. Ok? It wasn't a bear," Dustin cut in, "why're you even here if you don't believe us?"
"Curiosity," I gestured to outside before gesturing to Max, "cat."
"That's dumb," he shot back, "you should just go home."
"Yeah, maybe, but we're only human. Everyone's like that sometimes," I shrugged.
"Yeesh—someone's cranky," Max rolled her eyes, "past your bedtime or what?"
After that snarky line, she started up to the roof to join Lucas.
"That's good," Steve nodded to Dustin like he was some kind of teacher and Dustin his student, "just show her that you don't care."
"You are not still on that, are you?" I gave him a disbelieving look as Dustin just paced before turning to us.
"I don't," Dustin replied as Steve just pulled a stupid face and winked, "why're you winking, Steve? Stop. I genuinely don't care."
I glanced over at Steve who just raised his brow questioningly and I rolled my eyes.
He's an idiot.
We all fell silent with that and just stared forward, we could hear Max telling Lucas about her... not so great family situation. It was getting sweet but then a loud screech-like roar tore through the area and we all threw ourselves to the grated windows.
"Can you see it?" Steve asked.
"No," Dustin answered.
"Nothing," I nodded.
"Lucas! What's going on?!" Dustin shouted up to the pair on the roof.
"Hold on!" was what we got back from the teen, "I've got eyes! Ten o'clock! Ten o'clock!"
"Shit that's this way," I pointed to the side.
"There," Steve pointed out, I squinted and nodded.
"It's..." I hummed, "I don't think... that's what we fought last year."
"What's he doing?" Dustin asked, moving next to us.
"I don't know," Steve shrugged.
It was hard to see with the fog, but it was definitely out there, and we could definitely tell that it wasn't anything close to what we fought last year. Last year it was tall and fucking terrifying. This is... I don't even know. Small but like how a husky is small.
And on all fours.
Again, like a dog.
It seemed to be... sniffing? Maybe?
We could hear its patterned grumbling that could've been described as chirps if you were willing enough to consider it as such.
"He's... he's not taking the bait," Steve muttered, "why is he not taking the bait?"
"Maybe... he's looking for something bigger?" I asked before pausing, "or wait—"
"What?" he looked at me.
