Two Months Before the WeddingKatherine Swan folded a silk blouse and carefully placed it into a cardboard box. She picked up another blouse and began to fold it on the bed. Next to her, Jessica was babbling away about her new dorm room decorations while Kate nodded her head in the appropriate places and pauses.
It had been months since since the battle with the Seattle vampires. Since then Kate's life had been surrounded by tulle, ribbons, and pearls as Alice prepared for Bella and Edward's wedding. There had been nonstop appointments that Bella had been dragged to for cake, flowers, and the dress. All of which Kate hadn't been asked to participate in. Still still hadn't gotten over Bella's decision to turn into a vampire and was to stay far away from anything wedding related.
Despite this, Bella and Kate had continued to be conversational. They talked like they used to about everything except, the wedding or anything vampire related. Though, Bella couldn't maintain eye contact and tended to be out of the house as much as possible. But, at least they were talking. The Swan house wasn't as hostile as it was a few months ago but it still wasn't easy to be in the same room as both of the Swan sisters.
Somehow, in the middle of all of this madness, Jessica had convinced Kate to help her pack for college. She didn't mind though, it was easier than being at home and seeing all of the wedding preparation going on without her. She had already been at Jessica's house for two hours though and her arms were starting to hurt from all of the clothes she had folded.
The shirt Kate had been folding was ripped out of her hands and she looked up to see Jessica scowling at her.
"Have you been listening to me? It's like you don't even care," Jessica asked her.
Kate shook her head, "You were talking about how it's totally unfair that you have to room with Angela and how you should have a room to yourself."
"Exactly! How am I going to keep all of my stuff?"
"Downsize?"
"That's not funny."
"Oh come on! Rooming with Angela isn't going to be the worst thing to happen. Listen, she'll either studying or out of the room most of the time doing extracurriculars. So you'll basically have the room to yourself."
"You're probably right."
Kate smiled, "Remind me again why you're having me help pack so early?"
"Listen, I'm only being prepared."
"Neurotic. That's what you are."
"No, I just like having everything ready."
"I stand by my statement."
Jessica frowned, "Kate you're going to be all alone this year."
"Maybe not."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I'm thinking of asking my dad if I can finish up high school online. That way I don't have to be by myself and I can do my work in my pajamas at home."
"Great, you're going to end up as one of those weird loner kids."
Kate laughed and picked up the shirt she had been folding and finished putting it in the box. She went to grab another shirt and began to work on that one. Jessica bounced around her room and went to her closet. She pulled out a gold dress, held it up to her, and spun around in a circle making the dress fly out.
Kate smiled at Jessica and began to seal up the box. She grabbed a marker off of the bed and began to write "Closet" on all of the sides of the box.
"So? What do you think?" Jessica asked her.
"I think if Edward wasn't marrying my sister, I think he'd be all over you."
"Really?"
"Oh, sure" Kate said with the utmost sarcasm.
"What color is your dress because I'd hate it if we clashed."
Kate paused for a moment with the permanent marker still in the air before capping it and moving across the room to grab other box.
"I don't have a dress."
"How can you like not have a dress? What, are you going to go naked? I bet Jacob would love that."
"I'm not going."
Jessica hung up her dress again, "Why aren't you going? You're the bride's sister! You have to go!"
"I don't really want to go, Bella and I haven't gone back to fully speaking yet."
"But Bella would want you there"
"I'm pretty sure she doesn't," Kate snapped.
Jessica sat down on the bed next to Kate and handed her a pair of jeans to fold, "Well is Jacob going?"
"He's Bella's best friend of course he's going. He about had a fit when I said I wasn't going. I told him to go and to have a piece of cake for me."
"And Edward's okay with that?"
"Edward would set himself on fire if Bella asked him to. He can't say no to her. Besides, some more of the Quileute boys are going too. "
Jessica threw her hands up, "That's like wrong on so many levels. And your parents are fine with this?"
Kate just shrugged and grabbed other pair of jeans to fold and pack up.
"What are you going to do instead?" Jessica asked her.
"Well, the water is still warm so I was thinking of going to the beach."
"If that's not the saddest thing I've heard then I don't know what is."
Kate went home later that afternoon to find Charlie standing in front of the mirror that was hung up in the hallway tying an untied bowtie into knots around his neck. Despite all the pretense, Charlie was actually looking forward to the wedding. After the initial negative reaction, Charlie got on board doing everything Alice asked of him.
She paused in the doorway and laughed when Charlie turned to look at her with a scowl on his face.
"Go on, laugh it up," he grumbled.
"No, dad, it's great. Really! You just need some practice."
Charlie walked into the kitchen taking the bowtie off of his neck, "I don't know how Alice convinced me to do this."
"Because if she says 'jump', you say 'how high'?"
"I'm starting to see why you don't like that girl."
Kate took a soda out of the fridge, "Hey she's not forcing me into tux."
"She should be forcing you into a dress."
"We're not having this discussion again, dad. I've had it twice already with you and like four-thousand times with mom. I'm not going. I don't really want to.."
She remembered the conversation she had with her mother when she found out Kate wasn't going to the wedding. Her mother yelled at her over the phone about the value of family for an hour. Kate sat there and took all of the harassment not mentioning the fact that it was Bella who didn't want her there. The only people who knew the truth was the resident supernaturals of Forks, as per usual.
"What's going on with you and your sister?" Charlie asked, "I thought it was better."
"Almost. But look on the bright side, if there's going to be family drama, it won't be coming from me. And don't say you'll talk to her. It's not worth it, really. She and Edward are going to look great."
Charlie walked over to her, "You know I'd be nice if you changed your mind."
"Yeah, I know...Well I'm going to go watch TV or something."
Charlie nodded and watched as she made her way upstairs. On the top step she turned around and came halfway back down them to get her dad's attention.
"Hey, dad, watch a YouTube video or something to learn how to tie that thing."
Charlie pursed his lips, "Right. I'll do that."
