With the arrival of the new, admittedly creepy, vampires, Eleazar and Carlisle decided to hold a council to decide what should be done now that it was made apparent that the Volturi were coming for a fight. Kate sat herself between Bella and Jacob and waited for the others to gather.
Jacob leaned down next to her and whispered in her ear, "What are you thinking?"
Kate didn't look at him. She kept her gaze fixed on the piano in front of her. Her mind had been whirring ever since Vladimir and Stefan had confirmed her suspicions. In her heart, Kate knew that this would always end in a fight. There was no way that it wouldn't. There was too much that the Volturi saw as "wrong."
"I'm thinking that this was always inevitable," she told him.
What she hadn't told him, was that she had been prepared to fight since the moment she had heard about this. The Volturi wouldn't let her do anything but fight for her life. She wasn't going to run from this. This was how it was always supposed to end.
Jacob grabbed her hand and held it gently in his. His thumb ran over the back of her fingers, slowly. Kate allowed herself to relax into his touch. Despite all of the fear and the tension inside of her, he could take it away with just a simple touch. She was determined not to waste any moments she had with Jacob. As they sat there, Kate wished that they could just go away for a little while, but she knew that it would be impossible. With the threat that was looming toward them, Jacob's new pack, and the family they would be leaving unprotected it would never happen. Neither Jacob nor Kate would leave Forks just now, despite how much they might want to.
Eleazar finally came into the room and cleared his throat, "Thank you all for coming here. There has been some enlightening on our situation. When Aro wants someone from a coven, it's not long before evidence turns up proving that coven has committed some crime."
"So he's done this before?" Bella asked.
"It happens so rarely, I never realized that it was a pattern."
Carlisle chimed in, "Apparently he always pardons one person whose thoughts he claims are 'repentant.'"
"This person always has an ability and they are always given a place with the guard," Eleazar added.
Edward shook his head, "This is all about Alice. He has no one like her."
"Which is why she left," Bella reasoned.
Kate shook her head, "She shouldn't have left. If this is about her, then she should have stayed."
Some of the other vampires in the room nodded their heads seeming to agree with Kate's logic. Bella gave her sister a withering look but Kate didn't back down. This was more than just her dislike for this girl. Alice had abandoned her family when they need her most, and it was all because of her that they were in danger in the first place, apparently.
"Why does he need witnesses?" Emmett asked, looking disgusted.
Alistair, one of Carlisle's friends, had the answer to this one, "To spread word that justice has been served. After he slaughters an entire coven."
His words hit the group like a ton of bricks. Several covens held onto each other for support at this statement. Jacob's hand tensed around Kate's for a moment before resuming it's gentle strokes. They looked at each other, they both knew that this was why the Volturi were coming. It wasn't new information, but hearing those words spoken out loud seemed to make it even more real. The fear seemed to permeate the room in icy tendrils to their very bones.
Next to them, Amun snatched up Kebi's hand and started to drag her across the room with a furious look on his face. He marched right up to Benjamin and Tia who both looked startled at their coven leader's actions.
"Benjamin, Tia, we're leaving," Amun demanded, sternly.
Edward turned to him, "And where will you go? What makes you think they'll be satisfied with Alice? What's to stop them from going after Benjamin next?" His gaze moved to the rest of the room, "Or Zafrina? Or Kate? Or anyone else with a gift, anyone they want."
There was a pause as his words sunk in, "Their goal isn't punishment, it's power. It's acquisition. Carlisle might not ask you to fight, but I will. For the sake of my family, but also yours. And for the way you want to live."
No one moved, and for vampries this was very creepy. Everyone seemed frozen just looking at one another. No one wanted to be the first one to say anything.
Taking a deep breath, Kate stood up. Every pair of red and yellow eyes turned toward her. She looked at her brother-in-law with a steely look.
"They're after me too. I won't sit back while they go after everyone I love, after my family. I'll kill them all if I have to, or die trying."
Edward held her gaze for a while before nodding his head at her. For some reason, Kate no longer felt fear coursing through her. Instead, it had been replaced with a warm courage. It felt as if there was a breath of fresh air running through her. She felt stronger, no longer paralyzed from fear. Her powers seemed to agree with this change. She felt charged, almost like she was already prepared for the attack. The only other time she had felt something like this was a few months ago when an energized blast emitted from her body. While not as powerful, it still felt strong within her. Maybe this feeling was why the Volturi were so scared of her. With this feeling, she could cause damage, she could topple them.
Movement next to her caught her eye, Kate turned to look as Jacob stood up next to her with a determined look in his face.
"The packs will fight," he declared, "We've never been afraid of vampires. We're not letting them get Kate."
Edward nodded toward him as well. Jacob looked down at Kate and gave her a soft smile. He placed his hand on the small of her back and stood proudly next to her. Kate's heart swelled.
Across the room, the Denali coven stood up.
"We will fight."
They, like Jacob looked determined to bring the Volturi down should they need to. The vampire Kate shot the siren Kate a smirk which the dark haired girl returned.
Garrett stepped forward, "This won't be the first time I've fought a king's rule."
Benjamin smiled, "We will join you."
Amun's head whipped around as he stared at Benjamin horrified, "No."
"I will do what is right, Amun," Benjamin responded, "You may do as you please."
Bella stood up quickly next to Kate who smirked over at her. "Kind of understood, sis," Kate whispered to her. Bella shot her an exasperated look and ignored her.
The Amazons stood as well, "We will join you."
With that declaration, the Irish joined the cause as did most of the nomads. Alistair was notably still seated. He watched the room with a judgmental look on his face, his lip curled slightly in disgust.
Over in the corner, Kate could hear Vladimir whisper to Stefan, "That didn't take much." Kate rolled her eyes at the two of them.
Edward took in a deep breath, "Let's hope it doesn't come to that."
"We'll see," Alistair whispered not too quietly to Carlisle before leaving the room for the attic once more.
