Kate pulled up to her house after dropping Embry off to see a distraught looking Jacob sitting on her porch steps. He looked up as she pulled in and stood up waiting for her. He looked terrible, even worse than he had when he had been injured a few months ago. Kate's heart clenched with a pang as she wanted to go to him but she was still upset.

She let out a sigh and opened the door. Within two seconds, Jacob was right in front of her. He tried to reach out to her but she side stepped him and went inside closing the door behind her. She leaned against the door for a moment before going to her room upstairs and laying on her bed.

Outside of her bedroom window she could hear pebbles hitting the glass. She knew he wouldn't give up. She lay there listening to the rocks hit her window for a moment before getting up and throwing open the window. She went back to her bed and rolled over to face the door with her back to the window.

She heard Jacob come up and crawl into her room. He let out a sigh and slowly walked over to lay down on the bed next to her. He didn't touch her, he just lay there in silence for a while listening to her breathe. Having Jacob next to her made Kate feel better, it made her heart feel lighter. She wanted nothing more than to roll over and into his arms but her stubborn side won out and she stayed facing away from him.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Kate said nothing in return.

He sighed once again, "I just...I don't like seeing you upset and if I could take away the pain, I would. Just please talk to me."

"No," she whispered back.

The bed moved slightly when she heard Jacob chuckle to himself, "Well there's a start. Kate, you deserve the world. No one should make you feel like this, especially not me. I feel like the shitiest person right now. I shouldn't tell you what to do. I'm sorry."

Kate hesitated for a moment before rolling over to look at him. He looked down at her and saw that, for the second time today, she had tears in her eyes. Without hesitation he took her into his arms and into his chest and once again, she cried. His embrace felt better than Embry's had. It felt like home.

"You were right," she muttered, "I just don't want to be the bad guy. I want her to be happy."

"You have a big heart, too big," he said kissing the top of her head.

"I love you."

"I love you too. It's going to get better. I promise."

One Week Before the Wedding

There was a knock on her bedroom door that startled Kate making her jump. The pencil she was using to draw with flew across the paper leaving a mark down the page. There was now a dark line down the middle of her drawing of the seaside. She crumpled up the drawing into a ball and threw it on the floor.

Kate sighed, "Come in."

The door opened and Bella walked in looking timid and slightly scared. Kate watched as she crossed the room and sat down on her bed.

"What are you working on?" Bell asked Kate.

Kate moved her hand vaguely in the air, "This and that. It's nothing, just something to take my mind off of stuff."

Bella nodded her head but didn't answer. Kate's gaze went to her hands which were wringing back and forth. Kate frowned.

"What's up? Something wrong?"

"No, actually. For once everything seems to be perfect."

"Then why do you look like you're about to tell a preacher you had premarital sex with his son?"

Bella scowled at her, "That's not funny."

"I thought it was."

There was a slight pause before Bella spoke again, "Listen, there was something I wanted to ask you. I know this hasn't really been my wedding. Alice kind of took over but theres somethings that I still do want. I know you don't agree with my choice of becoming a vampire but we can cross that bridge when we get there. All I know is... that I can't do this without you. You're the one person who has always been there for me even when I wasn't the best sister to you. So...will you be my maid of honor next week?"

Kate sat there stunned not knowing what to say. She just stared into her sister's eyes, Kate's mind going a million miles an hour. She never thought that she'd be allowed anywhere near the wedding seeing as how she was so against Bella being turned. For months now, there had been talk of wedding dresses and cakes that Kate was not allowed to participate in.

She pretended like it didn't bother her but she knew that it really did. It crushed her to not be a part of it but she was going to stand by what she believed in: Bella should not be a vampire. It had been a year and a half since the James incident and she still hadn't changed her mind. To further encourage her, Jacob was also adamant that Bella stay a human. He just wasn't so vocal about it so he still got an invitation to the wedding. But Kate knew that if it came down to it, Jacob couldn't harm Bella even if Sam ordered him to. It would destroy Kate if her sister died and the power of the imprint was far more powerful that an Alpha's command.

At this point, Kate realized that she hadn't said anything and was simply staring at Bella with an incredulous look on her face. Bella had begun to shift nervously on her feet and pulled her hands into her sweater's sleeves so she wasn't standing there as awkwardly.

"It's fine, you don't have to, just forget I mentioned it," Bella muttered and turned to open the door.

But before Bella could step through the door, Kate seemed to come out of her trance and realize that this moment of happiness was slipping away.

"Wait! Sorry, yeah, sure," Kate tried to say cooly. She didn't want her sister to think that she was overly excited about the prospect of attending the wedding let alone being in it. "Yeah, I'll do it."

"Really?"

"I don't have to change my mind about the whole dying thing, do I?" Kate asked.

Bella shook her head with a small awkward laugh, "No, I just want you there."

Kate forced down a small whoop of triumph before grimacing and visibly flinching. Bella's face creased with worry.

"What's wrong?"

"Does this mean I have to listen to Alice?"

Bella let out a laugh, "Yeah, I think so."

"Shit," Kate groaned, " You know she's going to make this as difficult as possible for me, right?"

"Edward'll talk to her. Make her be nice to you."

The two sisters smiled softly at each other for a few moments before Bella quickly walked forward and engulfed her little sister into a big hug. As soon as it happened, Bella let go and left the room. Kate stood there stunned for a moment before a wide, triumphant grin broke out across her face. She leapt facedown onto her bed and smiled into her pillow.

This was going to be one hell of a wedding.
