Jacob and Kate road down the road on Jacob's motorcycle at speeds too fast to be safe. The two had spent the day being tourists around the city of Seattle and enjoying each others company. The trees zoomed past them as they rode back to the reservation and back to their familiar reality.
As they pulled up to Jacob's house, next to Kate's Jeep, sat Charlie's cruiser. Kate got off of the bike frowning then looked at Jacob who just shrugged. It wasn't strange to see Charlie here, but there wasn't a game on giving him a reason to hang out on the rez. If anything, he spent most of his time with Sue nowadays, a romance slowly blooming between the two of them.
They walked into the house to it being deadly silent. Billy met the two of them at the door when they walked in trying to keep them calm with a forced smile on his face.
"Did you two have fun?" he asked.
Jacob nodded quickly before staring at Charlie who stood across the room, "What's going on?"
"Bella called."
Kate pushed past Jacob and Billy and ran up to her father, "What? What did she she say?
Charlie frowned, "They're extending their trip. Seems she caught a bug. They want to wait 'till she feels better before they travel."
Kate took a few steps back feeling like her heart had stopped. She knew this was coming but now that the moment was here, she didn't know how to react. She felt like her lungs had collapsed in on themselves.
"She's sick?" Jacob growled.
Charlie nodded, "She told me not to worry but she sounded...I don't know...off."
Sue, who had been in the kitchen, spoke up, "She'll be okay, Charlie. Come on, let's eat."
Kate looked to Jacob who had a murderous expression on his face. He glanced up at her and without saying anything, the two began to march to the door once more. Before they got there however, Billy stopped them.
"Jacob," he said grabbing his arm, "Let it go."
"He may, but I can't," Kate whispered to him before rushing out the door leaving Jacob behind. Before she made it to the stairs, Jacob was right behind her.
"I'll drive," he growled.
Once more, they sped off into the forrest toward Forks. Kate was seething, she didn't even have a chance to fight for Bella's humanity. She gripped Jacob's middle tighter.
"Faster," she told him.
He complied and they soon were pulling up in front of the Cullen's house. The two of them rushed up the stairs but were stopped in the doorway by Carlisle.
"Is it true?" Jacob asked the doctor.
Carlisle sighed, "Hello Jacob, Kate."
"Where's my sister?" Kate demanded.
From upstairs, Kate heard her sister's voice sounding a little weak, "Kate? Is that you?"
Without waiting for anyone or anything, Kate ran upstairs to see her sister. When she rounded the corner, Kate had to stop suddenly at the sight before her. Rosalie, someone who Kate thought she was friends with, was standing protectively in front of Bella who was sitting on the couch, hiding her from Kate's view.
"Rose, move," she told the vampire.
Rosalie stood her ground, "It's not you I'm worried about." She then looked behind Kate at Jacob who just came upstairs.
"Let me see my sister," she growled at Rosalie.
"Rose, it's okay. He won't hurt me," Bella's voice spoke up from behind Rosalie.
Grudgingly, Rosalie moved aside. Kate let out a small gasp as she looked at her sister. She looked like a skeleton with a tight, grey sheet of skin over it. The dark circles under her eyes were so prominent that Kate couldn't even really look Bella in the eyes.
Jacob walked over and sat of the coffee table next to Bella. There was some relief in his eyes at the fact that she was still human, "You look terrible."
Bella smiled, "Yeah, it's nice to see you too." She looked at Kate, "You too. I missed you."
Kate still couldn't even say anything but just looked at her sister who looked like she was dying right in front of her eyes.
Jacob asked the question he had been dying to ask, "So are you going to tell us what's wrong with you?"
Bella looked at Rosalie, "Rose, you want to help me up?"
Rosalie quickly moved in and grabbed Bella's arm to haul her up. Bella moved the blanket that had been covering her revealing a bruised, pregnant stomach. Kate stumbled back and almost fell over when she hit another chair. She stared at the stomach barely breathing. She didn't know what to do, she didn't even think that this was possible.
While Kate couldn't take her eyes off of Bella, Jacob charged over to Edward about to take his head off. But before he could reach him, Emmett stopped him.
"You did this!" Jacob yelled at Edward.
Carlisle stepped in, "We didn't even know this was possible."
Kate finally spoke up for the first time, "What the hell is it?"
Carlisle looked at her, "We're not sure. Ultrasounds won't penetrate the embryonic sack."
"I can't see it either," Alice admitted to them, "and I can't see Bella's future anymore."
"We've been researching legends but there isn't much to go on," Carlisle continued. "All we do know, is that it's strong and fast growing."
"Why haven't you done anything? Take it out of her," Jacob shouted.
"This is none of your business, dog," Rosalie yelled.
"It's my business if that thing is killing my sister!" Kate also yelled.
"Enough!" Esme reprimanded, "All of this fighting isn't good for Bella."
"The fetus isn't good for Bella," Alice noted.
Rosalie glared, "Say the word, Alice. 'Baby.' It's just a little baby."
Kate shook her head, "That's not a baby. Humans can have babies. Jacob and I, can have babies. This thing is just a monster that's living by killing Bella. What if the thing does survive birth, what will it be? A monster? Like those Immortal Children? Or worse? That thing could kill us all!"
"Carlisle, you've got to do something," Jacob pleaded with him.
"NO!" Bella shouted over everyone, "It's not his decision. It's not any of yours."
There was silence following this declaration. Edward broke it by walking up to Jacob, "Jacob, I need to talk to you."
Jacob and Edward walked outside leaving Kate furious in the room. She couldn't stop staring at Bella's stomach.
"Can I have a moment alone with my sister?" she asked the vampires. She wasn't actually asking for their permission but rather telling them to leave. One by one, they all left, Rosalie being the last one. "Do you really think I'm going to hurt my sister?" she asked her. With that, Rosalie left them alone.
