The Cullen's house was empty for the next few days. They had all gone in different directions seeking help. Bella, Edward, Seth, and Renesmee were the first scheduled to arrive back; they had only gone North to Alaska to see the Denali. When Leah found out that Seth was going to go, she was so angry that she phased and it took Embry and Quil both to restrain her from going on the attack against Seth, Jacob, the Cullens, really anyone.
Kate decided to take this time to be a normal girl for a while. She had been behind on her school work so she shut herself up in her room surrounded by notes and books as she tried to uncover the secrets behind Shakespeare's Hamlet and dissect the complex theories of economics. Despite all of this studying being counterintuitive, it eased her headaches and worries having to focus on something other than supernatural creatures for a while. Charlie was happy about this though, he kept pressuring her to look into colleges and universities for next year. She gave him noncommittal answers knowing full well she wouldn't live to see her graduation.
The one downside of being a "normal girl" was trying to find time to get a single word in when she called her over talkative friend. She was currently listening to Jessica rant about how badly school was going and it made Kate smile thinking about her.
"...like come on! It's was bad enough when we were in high school but Angela and Eric have taken 'cute' to a whole new level. It's honestly disgusting and I think there's something in the dorm rules about it!"
Kate chuckled, "Somehow I don't think there is."
"Well, there should be. Anyway, you have to come to a basketball game sometime and when baseball season starts up, you need to come in town for a game..."
A soft tapping on Kate's window make her look up from her notes and glance out into the darkness. She couldn't see anything so she crossed the room and looked out the window. When her gaze lowered, she saw Jacob standing in the grass below her window with a wide grin on her face. Seeing him smile like that sent a jet of warmth from her heart to the rest of her body and caused her to involuntarily smile back at him.
Without so much as a second glance, she opened her window and turned around to sit back on her bed. With the grace and silence of a cat, Jacob climbed through her window and into her room. He silently made his way over to her bed and laid down upon it as Kate sat with her legs crossed still on the phone.
"...and when you're here we can take you to a party!"
Behind her, Kate could hear Jacob chuckle, knowing full well that he could hear everything Jessica was saying.
"Um, Jessica, you're forgetting I'm only seventeen."
"It doesn't matter. All you have to do is put on red lipstick and pull your top down a little and you'll be fine!"
Jacob's hand, that had been running up and down Kate's back, stilled for a second before continuing. Kate turned and gave him a withering, disbelieving look before turning back around.
"Yeah, I don't think so. I don't typically do that and besides, I'm still with Jacob."
She could hear the shock in her voice over the phone, "Really? I would've thought you guys would've broken up! Don't teenagers do that stuff all the time?"
"Nope. And Jess, you're still a teenager, you're eighteen.
"Okay, first, I'm an adult. Second, I'm in college. And third, that's surprising considering Mike and I broke up a while ago."
"Hence why you're so bitter to Angela and Eric."
Jessica scoffed, "I am not! I just think she should take the time to spread her wings and meet other people."
