A cold warmth settled into Kate's stomach as she looked directly into Aro's red eyes. There was nothing but pure calculation beneath his lids as he observed her. It was as if she was being scanned from head to toe and there was nothing she could do to shy away. She was exposed.
Aro stalked toward her very slowly, even by human standards. He moved as if she was a dangerous criminal holding a dead man's switch just waiting to take out everyone near her should harm come to her. He was partially right. He stopped right in front of her before giving her a sickly grin.
"Katherine, is it?" his voice washed over her and she struggled to stop herself from shivering.
"You know it is."
Aro giggled, "Yes, I do. It seems funny, how we have never met before. Even when I looked through young, Edward's thoughts. How?"
Kate felt a small sense of pride and accomplishment at this comment. She had just barely controlled her powers over a year ago when she used her powers on Alice, and by extension the rest of the Cullens.
Kate then did something so unexpected Jacob and Alice didn't know how to respond. Kate stared right into Alice's eyes with her own glowing bright blue.
"No matter how they use their powers you will not expose me to them. The memories of me will be locked away no matter how hard they try to access them. They will not know of my existence from the Cullens," Kate's voice was low and soothing as it washed over Alice. Alice's eyes glazed over as the command took hold of her. Now bound to Kate's will Alice returned to normal and took a few steps back from the siren shaking her head.
"You know how" she spat back. She could feel Bella tense up beside her but she ignored her sister. "If it wasn't for Irina you would never have known about me."
Aro signed and his grin widened, "Ahh... the arrogance of youth. It is so refreshing after having lived so long." He took a step closer to Kate who didn't step back but stood her ground. They stared at each other for a second before his gaze dropped from hers. He held out one, pale hand for her to take. "May I?"
Kate could feel Jacob eyes boring into the back of her head, begging her to back away from the vampire. But she knew that she had no choice. She had to let him do this or the slim chance of her leaving this field would disappear faster than she could retract her hand. So, in a one, last ditch effort to save her own life, she reached out and placed her palm on Aro's.
It felt like she was being transferred out of her body at the speed of a rollercoaster launching. The sensation stopped as suddenly as it had started and it felt like she was within the screen of a movie. However, unlike the latest blockbuster, it was the movie of her life.
It began with the earliest memories of small family. Her mom, dad, and Bella were all laughing around a dinner table. Kate didn't have time to fell sadness as she watched because soon, those memories darkened as her family split apart with her parents divorce. Not that her memories showed the true picture of what happened but it was painful enough.
They soon shifted into happier memories of her life in Arizona. She could almost feel the warmth of the sun hitting her face with the desert in the background. These memories of Arizona had been far more pleasant than her latest ones.
Then, her life in Forks played out in front of her. It all blurred together as her life became full of magic and the supernatural. She watched as some of the best and the worst moments of her life appeared. She didn't even have time to muster any emotion before it was over.
Her vision came back to the present moment and she blinked a few time to adjust to the brilliant whiteness of the snow. As she did, she looked over the faces of the Volturi and realized that no time had actually passed. She had watched the entirety of her life flash before her eyes in less than a second.
She hadn't even noticed that Aro was stroking her hand while examining her facial expressions for any signs of weakness. She hoped that she hadn't given him any.
"Well, well," Aro began, "How interesting."
Kate gently took her hand back and let it fall to her side, "Is it?"
Aro chuckled, "I have never seen a siren so intertwined with covens as you are. Especially, these wolves."
"Isn't it my job to be?" though the question sounded innocent enough, there was malice laced underneath the words. Subtle as it was, Aro surely picked up on it.
"Then you know why you pose such a danger to our communities and you know why I cannot allow you to continue on posing a threat."
"If you're going to kill me, then get it over with. I'm tired." She truly meant it. Kate had had enough. Enough of the lies, enough of the dangers, enough of the constant fear.
She could hear Jacob's cold growl and Bella's hiss of indignation at her words.
Aro outright laughed in her face, "Such bravery. And yet, such ignorance. Who do you think has stopped the humans from hunting us down, keeping our secret? It hasn't been your kind for a thousand years. When your kind roamed free, humans feared our existance. It was only the Volturi who protected our secret."
Aro had been working himself up to a slight frenzy. Kate could feel that the moment she had been waiting for would happen. Once she was dead, there would be nothing stopping the Cullens from ending the Volturi's reign of terror. There was nothing stopping them from protecting Renesmee to the fullest extent.
He turned to the rest of the court and his witnesses, "For the first time in our history, humans pose a threat to our kind. Their modern technology has given birth to weapons that could destroy us. Maintaining our secret has never been more imperative. In such perilous times, only the known is safe. Only the known is tolerable, and we know nothing of what this child will become nor do we know if this siren can be trusted to remain placated. Can we live with such uncertainty? Spare ourselves a fight today, only to die tomorrow."
Kate knew that her moment had arrived, the finale of it all. She knew that the Volturi would move on her first. As the seconds dragged on before everything snapped into motion, she couldn't bring herself look at Jacob, one last time. They had said their goodbyes, now it was time to finish this.
Before anyone could move, everyone heard rustling coming from the trees along the edge of the clearing. A seconds halted breath, before two people Kate never expected to see again appeared. Alice and Jasper walked into view.
Kate never thought she'd say this, but she was glad to see her.
