Dear Alex, 

a couple years ago i was told that my dad was not my real dad i was sad. well anyway now i visit my real dad and its weird i know i love him in my heart but its weird to call my wat would be stepdad dad around him but i dont know should i call my real dad dad or just stick with his name til i get to know him better? ive been visiting him for about a year now but like only once or twice a month

Dear the confused, 

Wow... well out of anyone I should know that it is really sad to find out that one of your parents isn't really the one that gave birth to you (i think that's how it's said). But I haven't had the chance to actually meet that birth parent. I think that you should call your real dad whatever your comfortable with. If your not comfortable with calling him dad then you shouldn't call him dad and by his real name. I for one, probably wouldn't even call him his name and just avoid giving any titles to it. 

I know it would be weird to call your step dad, dad, around your dad but your real dad wasn't around at the time that your step dad was. So your real dad may be hurt but he needs to understand that little fact. So if he doesn't say anything to you about it then you shouldn't feel weird to call your step dad, dad. He was the one that raised you after all. (that's if he stuck around your whole life)
