06: He wants to Change

(a/n: it's finally here! i hope you all excuse the tardiness of the chapter, and enjoy it! sorry it's so short!)

THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS that lead up to the day of prom were seeming like Aaron asking Aphmau to the prom wasn't such a good idea. For starters, her mother completely flipped out when she told her that she was asked to go to prom. Then, the next day, when she was out buying her dress, it began to rain. Aph had to run home with the dress and as she walked up to the entrance of her house, a part of the dress was ripped on a rose bush. On the third day, Aaron said he wasn't feeling too well. Then, on the fourth day, Aaron didn't come to school.

It was the fifth day, Friday. That day was Prom. Aph hadn't heard from Aaron the entire day and she began to grow a little weary of whether or not they would go to Prom together.

As she got ready for school, she received a text from Aaron.

Hey, Aph. Do you want me to pick you up to go to Prom?

Yeah, I don't think my mom can take me...

Okay, see you at school, Aph!

Aphmau frowned at how their usual conversations were much longer than this one. She didn't want to add on anything too weird, so she just replied with a simple, See you.

It was very simple, Aph hated that. She hated everything about the word 'simple'. Even the way that it was spelt and sounded she loathed. Of course, the word had other uses. But the main uses for it, Aphmau couldn't stand. After that little rant she had in her head, she ran over to her mom to give her the customary hug-and-kiss-on-the-cheek-goodbye and darted out of the house, in attempt to catch her school bus.

She made it to the bus and walked to the back of the bus where she sat down and stared. She didn't stare at anything in particular, but she did it to think. Think about the past couple of days and how they played out. The seat next to her went down, indicating someone had sat next to her. She looked at the person and her eyes widened in shock. It was the same person who called her names, been rude, and had done countless other things to mock her.

But this looked like a whole new side of Gene. His usual cold and dark blue eyes seemed a little lighter and inviting. Aphmau still couldn't trust him. Not after what he had made Aaron do. But the look he was giving her now made her think otherwise.

"Hey, Kitty, you alright?" he asked her, no hints of amusement in his voice, for once.

"Yeah," she croaked. Aphmau stopped. She turned back to Gene slowly and looked him in the eye, squinting, as if she was interrogating him, "What are you up to?"

She gave him a glare. "You just seemed down. I know I've been rude to you," he said, pushing a strand of his black hair out of his face.

"Huh, you think?" Aph mumbled, but Gene could still hear it. "What do you want?"

"I want to change," he continued, "I want to be a better person."

"That's not what I was asking - what, what?!"
