09: The Talk

THE RAIN EVENTUALLY stopped after lunch, which was good because Aphmau was walking home after school.

Aph was on her way to her last class, when she spotted a familiar tall boy walk up to her.

"Hey." Aaron said, sending shivers down Aph's body. His voice was calm and low, almost hoarse.

She gave him a smile that only Aaron could tell was very sad. "Hello." she replied.

"Can we talk?" she nodded not too eagerly, and chewed on the inside of her lip. It was quite obvious to see where this conversation was headed.

They took a seat on the outside of the school, already knowing that they'd be late for class. Their friendship was more important than their education, anyways.

"I'm really sorry, Aaron," Aph began. "These past couple of days have been really weird. We haven't even gone in the Dungeons this whole week! I don't know if you know how much that means to me, but it means a lot! I don't know why, but this week has been completely strange and uncomfortable. Today, I think it just hit me, and it hit me hard. I've missed you. I've missed you so much! What has changed so much this week, I don't know. But I really don't like it, and if it means just being friends rather than whatever we were last week, then so be it!"

At that point, Aphmau was on the verge of tears. She didn't care. They fell out, messing up her make-up, but now wasn't the time to care. Aaron was at a loss of words, not knowing how to react.

He had no clue that she felt this way. Going with what his heart said, he wrapped his strong arms around her tightly. Aph gave in to the hug, crying in his chest.

"I'm sorry too, Aph." Aaron admitted, still hugging the small girl. "I didn't realise that you had been struggling and-"

He cut himself off, not wanting to make up an excuse for this week.

"I am really sorry." he clarified. "How about, to clear things up, let's go to Prom...but as friends."

He didn't really want that, but he did it for Aphmau. He did most things for her. This week he didn't. Aaron thought that if he admitted how he felt to Aph, then he didn't need to be around her as much. He didn't really know why he thought that, it was stupid, actually.

Aph looked up at him, still holding on to the hug, her big brown doe eyes sparkling with happiness. "I think that is what's best." she bit her lip, shocked at her own response.

She didn't want to go as 'just friends' as much as Aaron did. But Aph didn't know that.

The late bell rang, telling the two students that they were ten minutes late. As they scrambled up and got their stuff, they heard a familiar voice- the voice of their principal, Chad.

Aphmau grabbed Aaron's hand and ran behind the bench where they sat.

"Sasha, you said that they were right here, how could you lose them?" Chad demanded.

"I ran in to the school to get you, what else could I do?!" she exclaimed furiously, throwing her arms up angrily.

"Don't get snappy with me, young lady!" Chad responded, pointing his index finger at her face. She rolled her eyes and glanced to the bench where Aph and Aaron currently hid behind.

"Whatever, besides, Gene and Zenix were somewhere around here." Sasha replied, pushing her hand curiously through her light-coloured hair, scanning her surroundings for the two boys. Aphmau lifted an eyebrow when Sasha said Gene's name.

She thought that Gene stopped hanging around the Shadow Knights. I knew he wasn't telling the truth, why did I even think he could change? Aphmau thought, exhaling a breath she didn't know she was holding in.

This entire day had been so chaotic, Aph could hardly think properly.

The two waited for Chad and Sasha to stop arguing and leave, which took longer than they thought it would.

By the time the two left, Aphmau and Aaron hardly had any time left in Werewolf 101, so they just decided to ditch it, not a good decision on Aphmau's behalf.

They roamed the halls until Aph decided to stop by her locker. A note was sprawled on the front of her locker, which stood out from the posters of Sword Art Online and Fairy Tale that covered her locker and separated hers' from the rest of the school's lockers.

She took off the tape that held it onto the locker door, and began to read what had been written down on the page, with Aaron hovering over her, reading it too.

    Dear Aphmau,

I wanted to continue off of what happened this morning on the bus. I really appreciate that you want to help me change, at least one person does. Meet me in the library after school so we can talk. I hope you can trust me.

Sincerely,
Gene.

"You trust him? What does he even mean by change?" Aaron interrogated.

Aphmau glanced up to him, chewing her bottom lip.

    "Okay." he sighed.

Aphmau's eyes widened in disbelief, not buying that Aaron was fine with this.

"If you trust him, I'll try my best to as well." the school bell rang, ending the school day.

"I'll pick you up at seven. Bye, Aph!" Aaron waved as he walked down the student-filled hall. Eventually he became one of the blurs in the shadows, leaving Aph alone to face her thoughts that were consuming her.

Aphmau nervously made her way to the school's library, letting out shaky and unstable breaths along the way. She didn't really trust Gene completely, but she felt like if he wanted to change, who was she to stop him?

She crossed the campus and made it to the library, air conditioning blasting her face as she opened the door. It made her feel cold, as it was December, making there no point for there to be more cold air.

She took a deep breath went inside before she froze to death. Aphmau had one question lingering in her mind, that she knew wouldn't be answered until she came face to face with Gene.

Could she trust him?
