Chapter Eight- The Big Date

Start from the beginning

She blushes at not only the compliment, but also the fact that he just called her cute. "Thank you," she replies.

Devin, being intoxicated by her cuteness, tightens his hold around her waist without even realizing it and smiles at her. "You look cute when you blush," he tells her, only for her to blush even more. He laughs at her very red face, not knowing the effect he has on her.

"Stop it," Melanie says, slapping his chest, feeling shy all of a sudden (see, not good with guys).  She buries her face in his chest to hide her face from him.

"Hey," Devin says. He puts his finger under her chin, making her look up at him. "Don't ever hide from me, okay?" he tells her. She nods at him, her face still a little red.

All of a sudden, it's like nothing else matters. They get lost in each others brown eyes. They start leaning in. Everything slows down.

But the moment is ruined. Right when their lips were about to touch, the Suns' trainer's whistle blows, signaling that it's time to head back to the locker room to discuss some plays. Devin and Melanie immediately pull back at the sudden sound. "Guess that's your cue?" she asks, a little upset that their moment was ruined.

Devin nods and sighs a little. "Yeah," he replies. Melanie pouts a little. They hug one last time, but before pulling away completely, Devin plants a lingering kiss on her red cheek. "I'll see you in a bit, okay?" he whispers in her ear, sending shivers down her back as she listens to his smooth voice. She nods at him once he pulls away.

Melanie watches him head to the locker room. Damn, she thought. She takes a deep breath and heads to her seat as the crowd starts walking into the arena to wait for the game to start.

~Game Time (Halfway through 1st Quarter)~

Devin runs and dribbles the ball to the 3-point line, goes for the shot, and makes it. The crowd erupts in loud cheers. He looks to Melanie's seat and sees her clapping for him, clearly impressed. He smiles, points at her and winks. Melanie smiles and bites her lip. Devin smirks at her and gets back into the game.

Devin continues to impress her, shot after shot, dunks here and there. Overall, the game has been good so far. Now, it's halftime. Devin walks up to Melanie's seat and smiles at her as she looks up at him. "So, how you liking the game?" he asks, smirking at her as she stands up to look at him better (not that it's really helping). (A/N- Damn, I really just roasted myself about my height 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣)

"I'm impressed, Book," she says. Devin smiles even more. "I'm looking forward to tonight."

Devin smiles even more. "Me, too," he replies. "Did you drive or Uber here?" he asks her.

"I drove here," she replies, sounding confused.

He nods. "Alright, don't worry about your car," he says. "We'll come back for it tomorrow morning. I'll be the one driving tonight." He smiles at her.

Melanie looks at him shocked. "Okay," she replies.

"BOOKER, LETS GO."

They look towards the head coach, Monty Williams, who is waiting at the entrance towards the hallway with the rest of the team. Devin sighs in frustration.  "Every time," he mumbles. Melanie giggles. He looks back at her with a guilty smile. "I'll see you after the game?"

Melanie nods at him as he leans in to quickly place a kiss on her cheek for the second time that night. He jogs towards the hallway to the locker room with the team. Melanie places her hand on her cheek, not being able to stop thinking about his lips on her cheek.

Melanie sits back in her seat to scroll through her phone, mainly checking her friends' snapchat stories (A/N- yes, i'm on snap- it's private tho). She stumbles upon her best friend's story, noticing that she posted a snap with her girlfriend. Melanie then starts feeling envious of her best friend. She was able to find love right after college, and she's at Clemson University for grad school to get her master's degree in psychology. And here's Melanie, just getting by with a couple hundred every month and not being able to apply for nursing school to achieve her dream of being a nurse practitioner. Just thinking about her sad life makes her feel sad.
