"Then why can't you keep your eyes off of me?"
I stood in front of Mason, my feet not touching the steps leading to his throne because I was already in a higher place than him. He was sitting comfortably with his ankle on his knee, and his elbow propped and his hand holding his head up tiredly. He grinned at my response, and looked me over patiently, "Well... shoot, whattaya here for? Wanna be a Pack member?" He smiled, uncrossing his legs, "Or are ya just lookin' for something to ride?"
I scrunched up my nose, "You'd be the last thing in this park I'd ride, Mason. I'm here to deliver a message from the Overboss."
He looked a little alarmed and perked up, "What is it? Does he need something?"
I raised my nose at him, "He simply says that it's your turn to give the Gauntlet it's upgrade. the Disciples and the Operators have already added their parts. It's the Pack's turn."
His eyes lit up, "Well hot damn! I've had a few ideas for the Gauntlet, but that son of a bitch Colter never lemme at 'em!" He grabbed a small notepad from under his throne, and pointed the tip of a pen to it. Before he opened his mouth, I spoke, "No, you can't be an obstacle."
He scratched something off the list, "Yeah, yeah, that was a stupid idea anyways..."
"And you can't put rabid animals in there together. They'd end up fighting each other."
"Damn, you're hard to please. I like that. Alright then, lemme pitch a few more ideas."
"Actually, I'd better get going. I'm just his spokesperson, so if you have ideas, pitch them to Nate, not me."
He narrowed his eyes at me, "Right."
I turned to walk off and he stood up, "Wait. I do have something I'll need you to ask the good 'ol Overboss, though..."
"What's that?"
"Would you mind asking if his messenger could have a day off?"
I frowned a little, "Well his messenger needs to make money."
He narrowed his eyes at me again, "Well, I have some personal business that I'd like his messenger to help me with."
I sighed, "What do you want Mason?"
"To take you out. Look, I can't make any promises about keeping my hands to myself, but it'll be fun. We can go hunting, if you want."
I raised my brows, "The only thing I want to hunt is Nisha."
He scoffed, "Believe me, I understand. What say we do just that?"
"Oh please. You know the rules. Nate would kill us both."
He shrugged, "Well... that's fine."
"If you say so." I smiled at him, "I'll ask for a day off then I'll get back to you. Sound good?"
