And so he did; he came over for breakfast. Not only on that day but it became routine. He bought buns - the baker was on the way from his house to ours - and then came over for breakfast, every day. My father was more than pleased by that. I don't want to say that he replaces Jaskier but I don't have to go to the market by myself anymore. We spent a lot of time together and it didn't seem forced but we had fun, as friends, I may add. Yet, I was not the same. He was, one could say, too polite. Today, after we went to the market, we went for a ride.
We were riding at a rather small pace along the road through the woods. "Who's first at the end of the woods." I yelled while I laughed and speeded up my light brown horse. "Oh, just you wait!" Jacob laughed and also speeded up. He soon caught up. I tried my best to get in front of him but it was no use; he won. As I got to the end he already grinned at me. "Now, what's my price?" he asked with that stupid grin of his. I rolled my eyes for him grinning at me like that. "I don't know. You won, so you choose, I guess." I shrugged. He looked like he was thinking for a moment but then came up with an idea.
"Very well. Then you'll go out with me." he stated and my eyes widened. I snorted in disbelieve. "Wha- you mean it?" I asked and he simply nodded. "Yes, I do. How about tomorrow? I'll take you out for dinner. A friend of mine works at a tavern, nothing too fancy, but it's out of town, so we'll need to get going in the afternoon. How about it?" I was surprised but nodded. "Yeah, sounds great, I guess." I agreed. Giving it a try, just like father wants to but my guts scream a big 'No' with having something with Jacob. "Great! Now, shall we return?" he asked and so we got back home.
At the dinner table, I told my father about my date with Jacob tomorrow. Jacob said that he'd come for me when we're going, so I'm not worried. "That's great, honey. You're closer than ever in getting married." He laughed and clapped his hands. I rolled my eyes but laughed along with him. "It's just a date, father. I don't know yet how it'll turn out." I said and supported my chin with my hand, steadying my elbow on the table. What's the big deal about it? Why is he so keen on me getting married?
After we ate I didn't go to my room but outside for a small walk. The sky was already red from the sunset and full of clouds. The crickets were chirping in the grass and only a few people were still outside. It was cool outside; luckily I got my coat with me. I went for a little walk behind our house. There was a little road that leads to a pond. As I arrived there were little ducklings following their mother. A frog was sitting on a lily pad enjoying the rest of the warmth of the sun.
I sat down on the grass near the pond. The frog got scared and jumped right into the water to hide. The duck mother was curious and looked in my direction but quickly turned away and got out of the water with all her babies following. I guess they're going to sleep as well. I got up and continued my walk.
I'm somehow excited for tomorrow, to see how much effort he's putting in this. Yet I don't know if Jacob's the one... No, I can tell, he is not. Of course, he's kind and also pretty handsome but I'm not that sure about him. I don't really feel the connection between us. My mother always told me about the spark she and father had. Maybe this 'spark' is yet to come... but I doubt it.
On my walk, I reached into the pocket of my coat to warm my hands. Inside it was a coin. As I got it out and looked at it, Jaskiers song popped up in my head. So I hummed the melody of the bard's ballade. It really is a good song he wrote, if not his best. 'Toss a coin to your Witcher, O' Valley of plenty' I wonder if Jacob ever heard that song and if he knows the Witcher who this ballade is about. I guess he does. Jaskier's songs are pretty famous here in the village, just as Jaskier. Still, I haven't seen Jacob here before so I guess he's rather new, even tho he said that his brothers left the village a while ago. Maybe I should ask him tomorrow.
I made my way back and the sun is almost completely gone and the stars are slowly visible. I barely could see the pond. The only reason why I noticed it was because the frog was back and quacked. It was somehow a relaxed atmosphere by the ponds but as it got darker every minute it got 'scarier'. Father often told me about children getting stories told about the 'Witch' living in our house, that she would catch children away by the pond. Silly story. Mother would never have done that.
At home, the lights were all out. I guess father already went to sleep. Carefully not to make a sound, to not wake my father I locked the door and went to my room. It was pitch black and so I reached my hands out to 'see' where I'm going. I went in the direction of my table where the candles were, so I could light them. I found the candles but the hard part was to light the match without burning down the house. Carefully I got one out and tried to light it in the dark. After three attempts I did it and finally had light in my room.
I blew out the match and put it down into a small bowl where it could cool down without ruining the wooden table. I quickly changed and got into my bed. I couldn't sleep because of Jaskiers catchy song. I do miss him and his songs I must admit that but I'm sure he'll be back any time soon, hopefully.
