Cintra was covered in smoke, dust, fire and corpses. Rumbling and cracking from the burning buildings was the only thing to be heard. The massacre had ended with no more people being alive in Cintra, or at least some were able to flee or hide good enough. The Nilfgaardians were busy infiltrating the castle, killing everyone, declaring Cintra as fallen and was now their own. The alleys smelled of blood and burned flesh.

Evelyn wiped her sword with a piece of cloth, the blood from the soldier she just sliced the throat still dripping from it. Both Witchers stood in the door frame of what seemed to have been princess Cirillas chamber. They started to look around the room, it was a little suspicious since their medallions vibrated. A book was laying on a chair. It was open as if someone just put it there and would be back soon but in reality, no one would be here any time soon. On a wardrobe, there was a green dress for a young girl hanging. On the small coffee table before that there was food being put on a plate, it was cold by now and the scent of any human being, other than the dead soldier in the door frame, was fainted. It's been days since someone was in here.

"You stay, in case she comes back. I'll be looking around the forests around it, she can't be far." Geralt said, holding onto Evelyn's upper arms. "Be careful." she told him while placing a loving kiss on his lips. "You too, I know you can and will kill any bastard that'll near you." Geralt smiled a little and then left the castle. Roach and Amber were outside the city, luckily or otherwise they could be dead just like the rest of Cintra. On top of Roach, he rode through the night, trying to find any footprints of the girl. He saw her face only for a second, as she was playing on the street but it was too short to really imagine it, to know what he was looking for. That made the search a lot more difficult.

He came across what seemed to have been a camp. The people in it were dead, the tents were destroyed and the scent of rotten flesh started to fly around in the air. A single old man was dragging these people on piles to burn afterwards, which would reduce the chance of necrophages coming around here. The man grunted as he put down the corpse he just dragged. "Ill winds follow grave robbers." Geralt said towards the man, who looked frowning at him. "If I was a robber, I'd be taking their belongings, Butcher." the man answered, clearly knowing who and what Geralt was. "If I was a butcher, you'd be amongst the corpses." Geralt said and the man looked at him for a moment and sighed. "I was going home to my family when I came upon these poor souls. Cintran refugees. Dead at least a week. Now they're feast for the crows." The man said while taking the arms of another dead body, who'll he take to the others. 'At least a week'? They must have been imprisoned for longer than they'd expected. Ciri must be long gone from these paths.

"They're not crows." Geralt said as he could feel the aura of monsters nearby. "Wolves?" the man asked looking at Geralt trying to find out what else would be coming then. "No." Geralt said, looking around, to find out from where they'd come. "With the hands of two, I could move quicker." the man said as demanding Geralt to help him. "The only thing you should do quickly is flee." he gave advice to the grunting man dragging another corpse. "Come on, Roach, we need to get Eve." Geralt said and turned Roach to get back. "Don't leave!" the old man said while watching Geralt slowly riding off. "Look at these people. Innocent people, killed for what? So Nilfgaard can have more land? We owe it to them to do better." The man said, putting corpse next to corpse. "I'm not better." Geralt said, ready to leave the forest.

Sighing he grabbed a big blanket which he threw over the corpses so no more flies or birds would feast on them. The ground behind the man opened and two humanoid creatures grabbed his legs what made him hiss and yell. Making the man fall to the ground more necrophages came and tried to pull him down with him. He clenched his fists trying to get a hold on the soft mossy forest ground. Geralt turned in his tracks, jumping off of Roach he struck down the ghouls. "Go home." Geralt told the old man who was panting and covered in sweat of fear. "I can help." he offered but Geralt shook his head. "One bite will kill you." Geralt said, his eyes being pitch black from the 'Cat'-potion he just drank. "Or you." the old man said, knowing that the Witcher could die as well, for once one cared. "Go home!" Geralt grunted giving the man a warning glare. "All right..." he mumbled in between grunts and did his best to get up and to his carriage.

For a minute nothing was to be heard, just the flies buzzing around the corpses and the old man getting on his carriage. A screech came from behind Geralt, he turned and slashed his sword at it, which made the ghoul being cut in half. The ground was moving, a ghoul crawling under it. Before he even could come out, Geralt thrusts his sword into the ground, stopping the ghoul. One managed to tackle him from the side, making the Witcher fall leaving the sword in the ground. With his bare hands, he tried to fight them but as ghouls were being ghouls they tried to surround him. One jumped on his back, one at his foot, the others surrounding and slowly approaching him. He pushed the one from his chest, through which movement the others fell off too. That didn't last for long as the next ones came crawling at him.

He ripped out an arm from one, using it as his weapon now, to keep them on distance. One made it on his back again, he held his neck with one hand, preventing it from biting him. He had to choke the one charging at him, so he couldn't take a bite of Geralt. Turning his upper body to the ground, the ghoul fell off and now he had two hands to crush a skull of one and break the neck of the other. Panting he looked around and saw that no more ghouls were in sight. He walked over to his sword but felt a sharp pain in his leg. "Fuck." he growled as he saw the bite on his upper thigh. He grabbed his sword walking towards Roach. After only two steps he gritted his teeth falling onto his knees. "Not a happy ever after, after all. A fitting end. Huh, Roach?" he said taking a last glance at Roach and then falling to the ground.
