"Evelyn, is it really you?" He asked again and I looked at his armour. It was blue in the upper left corner and the right corner at the bottom with three lions each on it. The other corners were white with three red rhombuses each. In the middle then was a yellow blazon with some sort of griffin in it. All of it combined to be the blazon of Lyria and Rivia. "I'm sorry?" I apologized since I couldn't recognize who he was but since he was from my country he knows me, right? "My name is Anséis, your brother." he said and my eyes widened. It's been nine years since I last saw him and Villem. I stepped forward and gave him a hug. It felt like the right thing to do now.
"It's good to see you again. You've grown so much that I couldn't even recognize you." I chuckled and then he looked me straight in the eyes what then made him confused. "Not to be rude but what in the bloody hell happened to your eyes?" he asked and tilted his head, I waved it off but he kept examining me. "You haven't aged a day. You must be almost 30 but you still look like the young lady I got to know you as." he kept enumerating facts about me. I sighed.
"Well, could be because I am a Witcher." I explained to him and his eyes widened. "What?! Since when?" he asked ruffling his hair a bit. I could feel how Geralt moved closer to me, to check up on what's going on here. "Since nine years." I answered honestly and his jaw dropped slightly but then he saw Geralt and his expression changed, he got angrier. "You!" he exclaimed and pointed at my lover behind me. "I still have a bone to pick with you!" he said but Geralt didn't look much impressed. "You took my mothers daughter away and left her broken-hearted, just like you did when you deserted the army of my mother." Geralt shrugged. "It wasn't me. It was her own decision." he said and I nodded. I got between them to stop Anséis.
He sighed and looked down. "Ever since our father died-" he started and my expression fell, looking in shock at him, waiting to continue. "and the heir of the throne refused to become Queen, Villem and I should prove ourselves worthy of being King of Lyria and Rivia. For me it is the knight's tourney here in Toussaint." he finished. "What do you mean by father's dead?" I asked him, ignoring the fact, that I just got blamed for not taking the throne. "He died three years ago because of his recklessness." he explained to me and I sighed. He was the parent who let me be who didn't force me into anything.
"Anyway. Geralt of Rivia, I challenge you to take part in the tourney to regain honour for the royal family in Lyria and Rivia!" He shouted and looked at Geralt with a challenging look with a hand stretched out for him to accept. Geralt sighed annoyed but took his hand. It was our vacation but Anséis wouldn't stop until Geralt would have accepted any way of challenge that my brother would want.
And so Geralt had to attend the accountant for the tourney. I joined him but waited outside. I didn't know where Jaskier was but I hope he stood out of trouble. I leaned against a board on which the names of the participators were written on. I looked up in the sky, to see it turning slowly into an orange shade since the sun was setting. I perfectly heard Geralt and the man talking inside the tent thanks to my enhanced senses, they were pretty handy sometimes. He was asked if he wanted to start as Geralt of Rivia or Ravix of Fourhorn.
Geralt's pov
"I'm Geralt. Not about to fight under a false name." I said with crossed arms and turned towards the old man sitting at his desk filling in a document. "You may now take the shield, bearing your crest." but I refused. "I'm a Witcher. Shields aren't something Witchers ever use in combat." I explained to the man. "Who mentioned using it in combat? Not I. The shield commemorates your participation in the tourney. You may take it as a souvenir." He said smiling and I nodded. "Hm. In that case, thanks." I answered and took the shield with Rivias blazon on it.
"Have you been instructed as to the tourneys challenges, prizes and vows? If not. I do hope you will allow me to tell you about them." He stated and as I knew nearly nothing about this tourney, I was interested in what I would participate in. "I heard of the contests. Rather make sure I'm clear of them." the old man nodded. "An admirable thirst for knowledge! There are contests three. A shooting range, where you will compete side by side with an opponent. A horse race, during which you will seek to complete the course within a specified time. Any targets hit with bolts or dummies felled with blade will increase the time you have. Finally, the group melee in the arena, crowned with a duel against last years champion. As each contest ends, its results will be posted on the board outside my tent. This way all will be apprised of who leads at any given moment." he finished his explanation on the contests.
"Come right out with it - I'm a sucker for prizes." I asked about the prizes in the contest. Wouldn't mind getting some of them. "The winner of each contest shall receive a trophy. Whoever has the best result once all contests have played out shall face last years champion in a final duel for glory and the title. Should you defeat the reigning champion, the grand prize will be yours. This year - a sword forged especially for this occasion by the one and only Cornelius of Assengard, a famed master weaponsmith."
"You said something about vows?" I asked my last question about this tourney. "As is our custom, knights make vows to which they hold for the duration of the tourney. Each swears on something which to him represents his most cherished virtue." I nodded "Feels like I know everything I'd ever wanted to know about chivalric tourneys."
"Splendid. In that case, you must make your vow. Upon what would you like to swear it?" he asked me about my vow and stood up from his desk to stay in front of me. This was something easy. Something or someone I cherished was standing right outside this tent. I put one of my hands over my chest was and started saying my vow. "I vow on the love of my lady, Evelyn, to respect the chivalric virtues." I swore on Evelyn and even called her my lady. I hope she's heard it and now is all flustered or even blushes like she always does on simplicities. "May the gods succour you in your endeavours to overcome. Sign here, please, then fill out these forms."
