Yawning, I walked down the steps. By the time I managed to heave myself to the bottom step, I had yawned approximately seven times. I didn’t get why I was so tired. I had managed to fall asleep at a reasonable time the night before. It didn’t help that I also felt sick to the stomach again with morning sickness. Luckily, I hadn’t had the urge to be sick yet - I just felt it.

As I walked into the lounge, the feeling of being sick disappeared as soon as I saw the room decorated with balloons and banners reading ‘Happy Birthday’. Amongst the balloons, Katy was stood grinning at me holding a huge envelope.

“Mummy,” she beamed, shoving the envelope right in my face.

“Wait until mummy’s woken up properly,” George grinned, patting Katy’s head as I picked her up.

“I’m awake,” I smiled, sitting down on the sofa with Katy still tangled around my body.

“Katy, what do you need to say to mummy?” George asked, looking at Katy as she turned back to look at him in confusion. “Happy..”

“Happy..” Katy paused as she turned back to look at me with a huge grin across her face. “Happy birthday!”

“Thank-you,” I smiled, opening the card that Katy handed to me to find that she had managed to write her name - obviously with the help of George, but it was still pretty emotional as I looked at her scrawled handwriting at the bottom of the card.

“Happy birthday to the most amazing mummy in the whole world. Lots of love,” George’s writing read followed by a huge “Katy” printed at the bottom.

It was such a challenge to stop myself from tearing up, especially since I was still half-asleep and my hormones were everywhere but I managed to keep them back.

“I didn’t know what to get you so..” George stopped talking as he handed me another envelope.

“You didn’t have to get me anything,” I smiled, reluctantly taking the envelope from him and beginning to open it.

“Happy birthday to the most beautifulest, kindest, funniest, amazing girl I have ever met in my entire life. I love you more than words can describe, but you know that. Hope you have an amazing day and night as you deserve it. Lots of love (and I mean it), George.”

Just as I was about to look up to thank him, fighting back the tears yet again, I noticed there was another card in the envelope. Reaching my hand in to grab it, I looked up at George in confusion but his face didn’t let off any clues as to what it was.

In the second card, there was a note.

“I didn’t know what to get you for your birthday and I know you will say that I didn’t have to get you anything but I do. So tonight, your mum has kindly suggested that she’ll look after Katy (well, actually, she basically gave me no other option - she was looking after Katy whether we liked it or not).” I sniggered as I continued to read the note. Mum was Katy’s biggest fan and any chance she had, she would be first in line to look after her. “You and I are going to have the best date known to man. I’m not telling you what we’re doing or where we’re going but prepare to feel special.”

I looked up at him and grinned, folding the note back up and placing it inside the card. “Can’t wait.”

Standing in the middle of mine and George’s bedroom, I looked into the mirror, debating over whether I should change the dress I was wearing and whether it was suitable for a family lunch to celebrate my birthday. It was raining outside but I knew that today was going to be my last chance to wear a dress until the babies made an appearance - and that wasn’t for at least another six months yet. I didn’t want to make it obvious that I was pregnant as so far, only mum and Michael knew out of my family. That was the last thing I wanted right now.
