Chapter 63

4.2K 169 37

I find myself climbing up and across buildings, popping where I can't jump in an effort to keep up with Endeavor and the others. We're chasing a man on a motorcycle- a hit and runner. If he was just a bit slower, I'm sure I could pop over and get him but-

He's cut off by a wall of flames shooting out from an alley, crashing off the motorcycle and skidding across the ground. I pop down but one of the sidekicks already has the villain restrained.

"The hit and runner has been apprehended."

"Looks like you four were too slow."

Bakugou growls a few feet away. "Buzz off! It just takes me time to warm up in the winter!"

I readjust my Recall Lenses as Midoriya appears at my side. When Todoroki mentions the guy's quirk and Bakugou starts bickering with him, we share a look.

Then Endeavor suddenly takes off again.

"By the way, in case you three haven't already noticed, that path opens up into the main road."

I turn to see one of the sidekicks giving a thumbs up. "You can leave this guy to us! After all, it's pretty rare to see him teaching anyone besides Shoto."

Behind me, Midoriya starts mumbling to himself and I take off after Endeavor. I make sure to stay behind him, not entirely sure where he plans on heading next.

"During my fight in Kyushu, I was able to split the work with Hawks but... a true hero must be someone who is able to handle every role on their own." Endeavor glances over to Bakugou with a glare. "Also, for the record, I noticed the glass villain's helpers before you did, got it?"

The ashy blond blasts forward, barking out a clipped snarl. "YOU'RE SO DAMN PETTY!"

I vault over the ledge of a building, popping over to the roof of another just in time to catch the tail end of whatever Endeavor had to say to Bakugou.

"-not a classroom. If you're ever too slow, you won't be losing points..."

I glance ahead to see a truck racing towards a few people on a crosswalk and I'm at their side in hardly a second, popping us to the sidewalk. The woman is crying, clinging to my arm and the man simply looks dazed.

In the same moment, Endeavor appears in the road and stops the truck in its place.

"...but rather human lives."

He glances down for the civilians and looks confused for a moment before his eyes shoot to mine. His brow furrows as he drops his hand from the truck. I tear my gaze from him, offering the woman a gentle smile as I help her stand.

When I glance back up, he's still watching me. I do my best not to shy away and wait for him to speak. When he does, I'm surprised it isn't directed at me. He turns to the others instead.

"Shoto. Bakugou. For the time being, I'm giving you both the same assignment."

"Why am I always grouped together with this guy...?" Bakugou growls. While their assignment is explained, I turn my attention to the man, checking him over for injuries before helping him up as well and Midoriya comes up beside me with a smile.

"Good job, Meraki. You were faster than Endeavor!"

I smile sheepishly. "Thanks... it isn't a villain but I suppose it's a start."

We check on the truck driver and then turn our attention back to Endeavor.

"-or alternatively, the ability to focus your power on a single point. Practice as many times as it takes until you can achieve one of those two without even having to think about it."

Midoriya turns to Bakugou with a grin. "Kaachan! That's pretty much the core concept of your AP Shot!"

The blond scowls angrily. "WHY THE HELL DO YOU KNOW THE CORE CONCEPT OF MY MOVES?! I'M GETTING A RESTRAINING ORDER!"

Eventually, we take a lunch break on the roof of a building. It overlooks the city and I realize I could teleport anywhere. A spark of an idea forms in my mind before the silence breaks.

"Meraki."

I glance up from the view to see Endeavor watching me again.

"I never asked what your quirk was. The others' explained theirs but you didn't. What is it?"

"O-oh, sorry... it's called Space Pop. Basically, I can teleport myself, and anyone I'm in contact with, anywhere I can 'see', visually or m-mentally, in an instant, regardless of distance."

"What are your limits? How far is too far?"

I glance back to the city as I respond. "I'm not sure. When I overuse it, m-my hearing can go out. It depends on the distance and how m-many people I'm moving." I think for a moment before continuing.

"The most people I've moved at a time was maybe nineteen or t-twenty over a couple yards? The farthest distance I've gone was one side of town to the other with Eraserhead."

Endeavor is quiet for a moment before he speaks. "You're faster than I am but you lack my environmental awareness. You notice things after me but can act before I can."

I wait patiently for him to continue.

"You need to work on seeing everything, staying one step ahead of everyone around you. Even when you aren't on patrol, look around and take note of your environment. Once you're familiar with what's normal, you can pick out what's not. I want you to notice something before I do at least once before this internship is over."

I take a moment to think over what he said before nodding. At my acknowledgment, he turns to Midoriya.

"Deku. You're already capable of momentarily drawing forth your maximum power."

"Yessir!"

"Can you do it subconsciously?"

Midoriya looks down for a second before glancing up. "Um... I can with my Full Cowl, but for my Air Force... I still have to think about it."

"In that case, your first step will be to learn to use Air Force subconsciously. Forget about your 'secondary ability' for now."

"But... to do that, I need to learn how to think in parallel..."

I watch freckled teen glances down before I turn back to my food, content with simply listening.

"Listen up. Everyone on earth is already capable of parallel processing on a daily basis. And subconsciously, too."

There's a momentary pause and I can't stop myself from looking up. Then-

"Just look at that guy, yawning and driving at the same time. It's not like he's always known how to drive. Steering. Acceleration. Braking. Processing what's ahead of him at all times. He learned each of those one by one, then practiced until he could do them all together subconsciously.

Start by doing two things together subconsciously. When you're done with that, add on a third.

No matter how strong or powerful an ability may be, that power is built on a foundation of smaller parts, stacked on top of each other, one by one.

Sure, there may be exceptions, but for the rest of us, growing at one step at a time is the only path forward. At least, that's the only path I know."

The pro glances back to us with an unreadable gaze and I find myself leaning forward unconsciously.

"Even if you practice the same abilities, the experience you'll be gaining here is worlds away from what you've gained at school.

Take the power you've fostered at school and now, at the agency of the the number one hero, make that power your own.

Fail as many times as you need to.

Whether the four of you succeed or fail, it will have zero effect on my work as Endeavor."
