Don't Bother Coming Home
Her telephone rang about a quarter to nine, her heart raced. (Y/n) picked up the phone with shaking hands, she heard his voice on the other end of the line. She wondered what was wrong this time, she never knew what his calls might bring. With a remnant like him, it could be anything. And she always expected the worst
In the back of her mind.He said,
"It's cold out here and I'm all alone. We didn't find her this time, and I sent the two home. I'm coming home, Love."
Kadaj's voice was calm, and carefree. But (Y/n), she felt her heart sink, and her palms start to sweat. She then could hear him start speaking again,
"I know I've been away too long, I never got a chance to write or call." Kadaj said, (Y/n) shook her head, knowing that he wasn't able to see her.(Y/n) felt her body start to shake, her body was shaking with nervousness. She waited for him for what seemed like forever, she dreamt about him every night. Since he always had a mission, she was always second to that damn mission. But, hearing his sweet voice was enough to make her cry out for him and break down because of the massive guilt she had.
"I know finding her has been hard on us all. But I'll be home soon." His surprisingly gentle voice said from the other end, making tears instantly form in her eyes. "And my love, is there something wrong?"
(Y/n) knew he would notice, Kadaj was a smart man. She hadn't said anything this whole call, there had just been silence from her end. Not even a simple "hello." She hadn't spoken a word. Of course, he would notice that something was wrong with his babygirl, he didn't need to be an expert to know that much.
(Y/n) took a shallow, shaky breath. The truth was about to come out, and it broke her heart to even think it. Kadaj left not for days, but for weeks or even months on end. She would go weeks without hearing from him, sometimes she wouldn't even get a call. It was a simple text that always had the same two words.
"I'm fine."
But, with such a massive amount of absences (Y/n) started to wander. Kadaj didn't treat her badly, no, not in the slightest. He treasured her among almost everything in his life, but not the mission. But, she understood why and it only bothered her a little bit in the beginning. Now, it irked her, it made it almost impossible to be with him.
So, when he was away. It was not out of malicious intent, it was just a coincidence or pure luck. That's why she felt so guilty. (Y/n) welcomed those feelings so easily, in the moment she had completely forgotten about Kadaj.
With a shaking voice, she said,
"Don't bother coming home. By the time you get here I'll be long gone."
"W-What do you mean love?" Kadaj asked, obvious hurt and confusion in his tone. This made (Y/n) want to crumble, run back and apologize. But she knew the reality of it all, she wouldn't be happy if she stayed with Kadaj."There's somebody new and he sure ain't no remnant." She said, mistakenly letting out her frustrated through the last couple words. But, what she said was one hundred percent true. (Y/n) had fallen in love with another man while her own boyfriend was out and about.
Vincent was there, he was always around and checked up on her. (Y/n) fell in love with him, and the fact that he never left without telling her or how he never left for days on end. Vincent was everything that (Y/n) needed, he wasn't anything like Kadaj. But, that also made her sad.
Kadaj closed his eyes, feeling his heart start to break. But, it was something he was expecting to happen sooner or later. He knew he wasn't any good for her, but he loved her and she loved him. Her words haunted him, someone new? He knew it was all going to come down to this.
He said,
"I'm sorry it's come down to this. There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss."
Kadaj held the phone tighter, feeling his knuckles start to whiten. He could hear her shaky breath on the other line, making his heart hurt even more. But, he knew it was for the best. For her. So, he continued."But it's alright, baby." He said, "If I hurry I can still catch the two before they make it home."
He sighed,
"Gotta go now, baby. If I hurry I can still find her."He left that phone dangling off the hook, then slowly turned around and gave it one last look.
Then he just walked away. He aimed his bike toward that wasteland line, with a little luck he could ride fast enough to forget her. But, in that Midgar wind he could still hear her say,"Don't bother coming home. By the time you get here I'll be long gone."
"There's somebody new and he sure ain't no remnant."
