Keefe's mind had been racing for days. Sophie had been distant, avoiding his gaze, her thoughts seemingly locked away in some place he couldn't reach. Every time he tried to approach her, she pulled away, leaving him feeling like a stranger in their own home. He wasn't a fool. Something was wrong. Sophie wasn't acting like herself, and it hurt. He could tell whatever it was, it was big.
For days, he had tried to give her space, to let her open up on her own time, but the silence between them only grew louder. Every night, when they lay in bed together, the distance felt unbearable. He would reach out, his hand brushing against hers, but she'd pull away again, her eyes clouded with something he couldn't decipher. Tonight, he was done waiting. He needed answers, needed to know what was happening before the gap between them became something they couldn't fix.
As Sophie entered their bedroom, her shoulders slumped, Keefe followed her inside, his footsteps firm against the floor. The door clicked shut behind him, and the moment stretched out between them. He moved toward her, his heart hammering in his chest, and within seconds, he was standing right in front of her. She turned, but her eyes remained fixed on the floor, not daring to meet his gaze.
"Sophie," Keefe said, his voice calm but laced with urgency. "What's going on? You've been avoiding me for weeks now. I need to know what's happening. Please, just tell me."
Sophie's lip trembled, and she bit down on it, her gaze flicking anywhere but his. Her hands shook slightly, and Keefe could feel the tension radiating off her, the walls she had built around herself so carefully. This wasn't the Sophie he knew—the confident, strong woman who never backed down from anything. His heart ached seeing her like this.
He reached for her, cupping her chin gently, tilting her face up so their eyes finally met. There were tears threatening to spill from her eyes, and it tore him apart.
"Please," Keefe whispered, his voice softer now. "Whatever it is, I can handle it. We can handle it together."
Sophie swallowed hard, her chest rising and falling with the deep breaths she was struggling to take. She closed her eyes, squeezing them shut as if preparing herself to say something she feared would break him. Keefe's pulse quickened. The fear in her eyes made his stomach twist. He wasn't sure what was coming next, but he knew it would change everything.
"I'm pregnant, Keefe," she whispered, her voice barely audible, like the words were a secret she had been hiding from him for far too long.
The world seemed to stop for a second. Keefe's heart skipped a beat, his mind struggling to comprehend the weight of her words. Pregnant? Sophie, carrying their child? His breath caught in his throat, his hand falling from her chin as his mind raced to catch up.
Sophie, sensing the shock in him, lowered her gaze again, her voice breaking. "I didn't know how to tell you," she continued. "I didn't know if I was ready... or if we were ready. I didn't want you to think I was doing this alone. I didn't want to be a burden to you, Keefe."
The pain in her voice twisted something deep inside him. How could she think that? How could she doubt him, doubt them? His hands trembled as he reached for her, his chest tight with all the emotions swirling inside him—fear, joy, disbelief.
Before he could speak, Sophie took a step back, almost as if she was trying to shrink into herself. Her hands shook violently, and she seemed on the verge of falling apart.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I should have told you sooner. I didn't mean to hide it from you. But I was scared. Scared that you wouldn't be happy about this... that I wasn't ready to be a mom."
Keefe's heart clenched. He stepped forward, not allowing the distance to grow between them. He couldn't let her continue like this, couldn't let her think for another second that she was alone in this. He reached for her, his hands gently pinning her against the wall, but his touch was soft, his eyes filled with emotion. Sophie gasped, startled, but didn't pull away.
"Sophie, listen to me," Keefe said, his voice low but filled with raw intensity. "You have nothing to be scared of. I'm going to be here. I want this baby. I want you. This is... this is the happiest moment of my life. I've imagined this, Sophie. Imagined you carrying my child. I thought about it for so long."
Sophie's breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes met his, wide and filled with disbelief. Keefe's heart raced as he saw the mixture of fear and hope in her gaze. He leaned in closer, his voice softer now, but every word heavy with love.
"You're everything to me, Sophie. And I want to raise this child with you, no matter what. We're in this together. Always."
Tears began to fall from Sophie's eyes, and Keefe felt a surge of relief. He reached up, brushing them away with the back of his hand before pulling her into him, pressing his lips to hers in a desperate, hungry kiss. His body pressed against hers with a fierce need, as if he couldn't get close enough. Sophie's lips parted in surprise, and Keefe took that as his cue to deepen the kiss. He kissed her like he had been starving for her—everything he had held back poured into that kiss, his emotions crashing over her.
Sophie responded instantly, her hands gripping his shirt as she pulled him closer, deepening the kiss in return. She felt the heat between them rise, the desperation in his touch telling her how much he needed her, how much they needed each other. She clung to him, kissing him back with the same urgency, her heart pounding as their bodies moved in sync, desperate to feel that connection again.
"I love you," Keefe murmured against her lips, his voice rough and breathless. "We're going to be amazing parents, Sophie. I can't wait for this. I can't wait to share this life with you."
Sophie laughed softly, the sound shaky, as she kissed him again, this time more gently, her hands tracing the lines of his jaw. "I love you too, Keefe. I should've known better. You're everything I need. We're going to be okay."
Keefe pulled back just enough to look at her, his forehead resting against hers. "We're going to be amazing, Foster. Our little one is going to have the best parents."
Sophie rested her head on his chest, her body relaxing into his embrace as she let out a deep, shaky breath. "I'm so glad I told you."
Keefe wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly, as if she was the most precious thing in the world. "You never have to hide anything from me again, Sophie. We're in this together. Always."
