168 hours since she slammed the door in his face--1

It had been a week.

Seven days since the fight.

168 hours since Sophie had slammed the door in Keefe’s face and refused to look back.

And honestly? She didn’t care.

Or, at least, that’s what she told herself.

If anyone asked, she was fine. She didn’t need Keefe. She had better things to do than think about how he had been spending way too much time with Lia, the Black Swan’s new recruit. She didn’t care that he had brushed off her feelings, that he had acted like she was being dramatic.

Nope. She definitely didn’t care.

Which was why she spent every spare moment throwing knives.

Sander had already learned to keep his distance—especially after nearly getting impaled. (“Sorry, buddy,” she had muttered as he dodged her last near-miss. He hadn’t looked impressed.)

If she wasn’t training, she was reading. If she wasn’t reading, she was ignoring the ache in her chest.

It wasn’t working.

But there was no way in hell she was going to be the one to apologize.

Meanwhile, across the Lost Cities, Keefe was suffering.

Not that he’d admit it.

He wasn’t moping. He wasn’t missing her. He wasn’t staring at his imparter, debating whether or not to message her.

He was just… giving her space.

Okay, fine, he was also sulking in his room, completely ignoring the outside world. But whatever. It wasn’t like he wanted to be alone. Sophie was the one ignoring him.

He groaned, flopping onto his bed and staring at the ceiling. “Ugh. I hate this.”

He missed her.

But he wasn’t going to apologize. He wasn’t wrong. She was the one who started ignoring him.

…Even if it was because he had spent a little too much time with Lia.

Ugh.

Someone had to apologize first.

But it wasn’t going to be him.

Right?

…Right??

“Alright,” Fitz said, crossing his arms as he looked between Keefe and Sophie. “This is getting ridiculous.”

Sophie sat on the training grounds, sharpening a dagger with unnecessary aggression.

Keefe leaned against a tree, pretending to be completely unbothered while his foot tapped anxiously.

Neither of them looked at each other.

Dex sighed, glancing at Fitz. “Yeah, this has gone on long enough. Just talk already.”

“No,” Sophie said immediately.

“Nope,” Keefe agreed, just as stubborn.

Fitz groaned, rubbing his temples. “You two are the worst.”

“Not my fault,” Sophie muttered.

“Definitely not my fault,” Keefe shot back.

Dex threw his hands up. “Are you kidding me?”

Biana groaned. “Oh, for the love of—Sophie, why won’t you just talk to him?”

Sophie clenched her jaw, keeping her gaze firmly on the blade in her hands. “Because he doesn’t think he did anything wrong.”

Keefe scoffed. “Oh, I’m sorry, is spending time doing actual work such a crime?”

Her head snapped up. “Keefe, you spent all your time with her. You ignored me.”

Keefe blinked, caught off guard. “I wasn’t ignoring you—”

“Yes, you were!” Sophie stood up, eyes flashing. “You don’t get to act like I was being unreasonable when you completely pushed me aside for someone else!”

Keefe scowled. “I wasn’t pushing you aside! I was just—”

“What?” she snapped. “Just forgetting I existed?”

Silence.

Keefe opened his mouth. Then closed it.

And Sophie?

She let out a breath, her expression going cold. Then, in the quietest, deadliest voice Keefe had ever heard, she muttered, “I’m done with this asshole.”

And then—she walked away.

Keefe barely had time to process before something whizzed past his ear.

THUNK.

He turned, heart pounding, to see a dagger embedded in the tree behind him.

She hadn’t even looked back. Hadn’t even aimed.

But her precision was impeccable.

And for the first time in a week, Keefe finally felt a flicker of something other than frustration.

Fear.

Dex let out a low whistle. “Well. That’s bad.”

Fitz sighed. “Yeah, man. You really messed up.”

Biana just smirked. “I give him two days before he breaks.”

Keefe scowled. “Excuse me?”

Biana raised an eyebrow. “You’re already thinking about running after her, aren’t you?”

Keefe opened his mouth to argue—

And realized he totally was.

Damn it.

This wasn’t over.

Not even close.
