Sophie’s hands shook as she clutched her phone, her vision blurred with unshed tears. She hadn’t meant to call anyone—she just needed a distraction. But before she could stop herself, her fingers had pressed Biana’s contact.
Or at least, she thought they had.
The ringing on the other end was brief before a familiar voice, groggy but alert, answered.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I meant to call—"
She froze. That wasn’t Biana. That was Keefe.
His voice softened immediately. "You're crying.."
Sophie’s breath hitched, and she wiped at her face as if that could erase the evidence. "It's nothing, I'm sorry to bother you." She moved to hang up, but his voice stopped her.
"Sophie."
She could hear the shift in his tone, that rare seriousness he only ever used when he was truly worried. She tried to steady herself, to keep the floodgates from breaking. But before she could say another word, she heard something in the background.
A car door opening.
Her heart skipped. "Keefe, what are you doing?"
"Tell me where you are right now." His voice was firmer now, leaving no room for argument.
Sophie hesitated, staring at the ground beneath her. She hadn’t wanted anyone to see her like this, hadn’t wanted to be someone’s problem. But hearing Keefe’s voice, the unwavering concern in it, made the walls she’d built feel a little less stable.
"I'm at the park," she whispered.
There was no hesitation on his end. "Stay there. I'm coming."
Sophie didn’t fight him this time. Maybe, just maybe, she didn’t want to be alone after all.

The soft crunch of footsteps on gravel made Sophie lift her head. Keefe was already there, breathless, like he had been running. His usual teasing smirk was nowhere to be found—only concern filled his ice-blue eyes as he searched her face.
Without a word, he stepped closer and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her against his chest. Then, with a tenderness that made her heart stutter, he pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
"My love," he murmured, voice barely above a whisper. "What’s wrong?"
Sophie squeezed her eyes shut, trying to keep the emotions at bay, but the warmth of his touch, the steadiness of his hold, broke through her defenses.
"I just—" She swallowed hard. "I felt like everything was too much. I didn’t mean to call you, but... you picked up."
Keefe pulled back just enough to look at her, his hands resting lightly on her arms. "Sophie, you can always call me. Even by accident." He smiled slightly, brushing a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb. "Especially by accident."
She let out a shaky laugh, and Keefe grinned, clearly pleased that he had managed to make her smile.
"Now," he said, looping an arm around her shoulders and leading her toward a bench. "Tell me everything, or we can sit here in silence. Either way, I’m not going anywhere."
Sophie let herself lean into his side, finally letting out the breath she had been holding.
Maybe misdialing wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
