Sophie sat in the passenger seat, watching the world blur past through the window. The sun was setting, streaking the sky in soft oranges and pinks, but the beauty of it barely registered in her mind. All she could think about was how empty she felt.
Keefe was driving, his hands gripping the wheel a little too tight. His jaw was clenched, his usual carefree smirk nowhere to be seen. The tension between them was thick, heavier than it had ever been before.
"So where's Linh going?" he asked, breaking the silence.
Sophie sighed. "Out-of-state college. She and Fitz are trying the long-distance thing for a while, like us."
Keefe let out a short laugh, shaking his head. "That ain't gonna last." He waved a hand dismissively.
Sophie stiffened. "What if people look at you and me and think the same thing?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the car.
She didn't want to ask, didn't want to say it out loud, but the thought had been gnawing at her for weeks. Sure, her college wasn't as far as Linh's, but it was still hours away. Would their relationship even survive that distance?
Keefe sucked in a sharp breath, his fingers tightening around the steering wheel. "It's different," he mumbled.
She turned to look at him, eyebrows furrowing. "How?"
He didn't answer.
The silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating. The radio was off, leaving only the sound of the road beneath the tires. Sophie turned and flicked it on, just to fill the space.
Then, without warning, Keefe pulled the car over to the side of the road.
Her heart stuttered as he threw it into park and turned to face her fully, blue eyes blazing. Before she could ask what he was doing, his hands were cupping her face, and he kissed her.
It wasn't a soft, gentle kiss. It was urgent, desperate—like he was trying to prove something to both of them.
When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, their breaths mingling in the quiet space between them.
"I want you to know," he murmured, voice rough with emotion, "that whatever shit happens during our long-distance thing? I'm still going to love you. You're the only girl I've ever loved."
Her throat tightened.
She reached up, her fingers tracing his jaw. "Promise?"
His lips curled into the smallest smirk. "Would I ever lie to you, Foster?"
She let out a breathy laugh, then kissed him again.
Maybe long distance was scary. Maybe it would be hard. But as long as she had Keefe, she was willing to fight for it.
And she knew—so was he.
