Sophie had just wrapped up another day of classes. As she walked back to her dorm, the weight of her exhaustion began to hit her, and she was grateful for the quiet. That was, until she heard a noise ahead.
Turning the corner, Sophie froze.
Keefe was there, in the hallway, a small, mischievous grin on his face as he balanced on one foot. And—was that a jellyfish in his other hand?
"Sophie!" he called, startled by her sudden appearance. He quickly dropped the jellyfish into the nearest trash can, looking like a deer caught in the headlights. "It's not what it looks like."
Sophie raised an eyebrow. "Really? Because it looks like you're trying to sneak a jellyfish into our dorm."
Keefe scratched the back of his neck, looking sheepish. "Okay, okay, so maybe it is what it looks like, but hear me out. I swear I wasn't planning on anything weird. Just... needed some company while I worked. You know how stressful things have been."
She couldn't help the laugh that escaped her lips. "Keefe, you're the only person who would think bringing a jellyfish into a dorm room is a good idea."
His grin widened. "Well, it's not just any jellyfish. It's a rare species. I was thinking I could train it. Maybe teach it to do tricks." He gestured vaguely, as if trying to explain a grand plan. "Could be a useful skill when it comes to distractions."
Sophie couldn't help it—she was already shaking her head. "Keefe, the only thing you're going to train is your ability to get in trouble."
He pouted slightly, giving her that familiar, irresistible puppy-dog look. "Hey, at least I'm trying to keep things interesting around here."
Sophie rolled her eyes, but her smile softened. "You're impossible, you know that?"
"Yup." Keefe grinned again. "But you like it."
She bit her lip, her heart doing that familiar little flip. "I might just be starting to."
Keefe's grin softened into something more sincere, and for a moment, it was just the two of them, standing in the hallway, the chaos of the day forgotten.
"So," he said after a beat, "want to join me in figuring out what else I can teach this jellyfish?"
Sophie gave him a teasing look, but deep down, she knew she'd never turn down the chance to spend time with him. Not when he made everything feel a little less serious and a lot more fun.
"Sure. But only if you promise not to bring any more aquatic creatures into our dorm."
Keefe winked. "Deal."
