I was just planning on finishing up my work and going home when I got the phone call that would bring me the greatest amount of irritation I believe I had ever felt in my life. Just moving around the room I had no idea what was waiting for me later that day, but I will always remember my blissful ignorance when it came to what was to come. I answered the call during my lunch break, this should have been a warning, but, as I said, I was blissfully unaware.
~~Flashback~~
"Hello, Vlad," I said after looking at the caller ID. "What's with the call? You never call me." Which was true. Ever since the bachelor party, Vlad had been going out of his way to stay away from me, which I was certain was only to keep from beating the shit out of me once he saw the whites of my eyes.
"I need you to come over to my place," he said quickly. "Allen and I need a favor."
"And what would that be?" I heard him sigh over the call and could almost see him pinching the bridge of his nose.
"You're on your lunch break right now. Am I correct?"
"Yes."
"Then you don't have time for the full details over the phone. Just get over here as quickly as possible. Once you're here, we'll give you all the information you'll need." I was just about to ask him again when the line went silent. I pulled the phone away from my ear to see that he'd ended the call rather than get into another verbal exchange with me.
"He must've figured out I was just giving him shit," I said aloud with a smirk. I put my phone back in my pocket and finished out my project for the day.
~~Flashback End~~
Recalling that I was to go to Vlad's place, I pulled on my jacket and made my way to the garage where my car was parked. Traffic made it difficult to park on the street, but this parking garage was such a pain in the ass with all the street racers hollering 'Tokyo Drift' out their windows and the many crashes they'd cause. Every other week it was one badly put together car after another smacking into hard working people's only vehicles, but no one would take the time or spare the expense for a set of security cameras though the structure to catch the little bastards thinking they're some Fast and Furious racer.
Finally getting to my car, I hit the button on my key fob to unlock the door only to have some scraping noise reach my ear before I could open it. I rolled my eyes when I realized what's going on. Soon enough some idiot kid pops out from behind another vehicle with a knife in hand. You could tell the little bastard was no more than fifteen, scrawny, addicted to whatever drug is popular now and scared shitless.
"Gimme the keys!" he hollered, if by hollering you mean nervously squeaking like a mouse stuck in a cat's mouth. I made no move to comply to see if this kid would grow the balls needed to carry out his intentions. He didn't.
"Look, kid," I said without turning round, "I know you don't have what it takes to do this. You want my keys so you can take my car to a chop shop, gut it for parts, collect some cash and probably pick up whatever drug has your hands shaking like they're stuck in a paint shaker. So, why don't you just walk away while you have the chance?"
"Bitch, you don't see I have a knife?" he said with what I suppose was supposed to be malice, but ended up sounding like a pouting child who didn't get ice cream after dinner. "I will use this if I have to, so just back away from the car, give me the keys and maybe I let you walk away from here without turning your face to hamburger."
I didn't even give him the pleasure of seeing my face. I just did a standing roundhouse kick to his hand based on the reflection in the window and knocked the knife out of it. When my booted foot hit the pavement so did his many footfalls as he ran away from the scene. I turned only to see nothing but an asshole and some elbows rushing round the corner toward the next level down. I sighed and shook my head when I looked down to the ground. A pocket knife lay on the ground a couple feet away.
