Chuckling to myself, I finished putting everything away. I then realized that I was just putting off my own trek to my new room. Nervousness had made me fidget with things I really didn't need to do. Anxiety had me trying to find anything to keep me busy in order to delay my progression to my room with Alucard. Sighing at my own ridiculousness, I blew out the last of the candles save one and made my way to the bedroom.
It was there that I found Alucard had pulled back the blankets, prepared a small bowl of water with cloths sitting beside it, and placed a screen on what I presumed to be my side of the bed to allow me some privacy should I wish to change. He, meanwhile, was crouched down before the fireplace where he poked and prodded at the logs to ensure they would evenly burn and wouldn't fall or roll out.
"Thank you for all of this," I said quietly. "I didn't realize just how much I was looking forward to not having to sleep in jeans before now."
Without turning, he said, "It stands to reason that you're probably the most uncomfortable of us all. You've been cramped up on that sofa in the library with no real way of cleaning up or making yourself comfortable to sleep. I thought that you should make yourself truly comfortable for a change of pace."
"That and the thought of sleeping next to someone who smells like I do at this moment is less than pleasing?" I snarked playfully. His response was to whip his head around so fast, I'm sure than if the neck bones would allow, his head would have spun completely off his neck and onto the floor.
"N-no! That's not what I meant to imply at all!" he expressed nervously. "I just wanted you to have one night where you could be as comfortable as possible."
I had to smile. This poor man, who was only trying his best to be sincere in his intentions, was laid low by my well-intentioned jest and was now urgently attempting to recover from the heat now climbing up his cheeks and ears. I put down everything and walked over to him in an effort to comfort him.
"Adrian," I said softly as I rested my hand on his shoulder, "I know what you meant. I think that my joke just didn't go over as well as I'd hoped it would."
Looking at me through his lashes, he grinned up at me. "I should have expected that. You do have a habit of poking people a bit."
"Yup, I do!" I said with a smile before sticking my tongue out at him and moving back over behind the screen.
I looked through my bag and found the parcel of clothes that my ex had unceremoniously thrown at me in the supermarket. The thought that the ex had even considered touching my things made my skin crawl, but I sucked it up and opened up the package. Just opening it up I could smell the fabric softener that I always use on my clothes and calmed down significantly, The idea that the ex had done something to my clothing was a real possibility, but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't a realized one. I pulled out a pair of shorts and one of my sleep shirts to change into, stripped out of my clothes that I'd no idea I was looking forward to taking off and began to wash up before bed.

I can't believe how much I'd jumped at her joke. I sounded so much like a kid caught peeping and trying to convince not only himself, but his accuser that he wasn't actually doing what he was being accused of. I could still feel the heat from the blush that exploded across my face even now, and my mind was still rolling through all kinds of excuses that I could have used to answer her question instead of sounding like a twit.
